Im not sure about the soma. It looks similar to what I had in mind. Sit it in a bed of gravel. Maybe pumice, but im thinking river rocks seems the most logical thing to use. And let the water continuously flow into that and back into the fish tank.
I don't see why using labs/em1 in it would be a problem. They are probably going to be there naturally, not that I won't add it. I found a website bioponica, their system works off labs, it's like an in situ fpj hydro system. They say fish can be used, and are encouraged. And if they can't, well fish are cheap. They'll turn into fish hydrolysate if they can't survive. And it'll still work as needed
