1456797167067444259245.jpg I recently got a gun in trade from my 84 year old neighbor. Im not really familuar with guns. Wondering if we had any gun nutts on the forum. It is a Smith and Wesson Model 66-1 in .357 magnum. Is this a decent gun? Whats it worth?

Im looking to get my first weapon, just something simple. Read about tactical shotguns as good defensive weapon.

Any good sites to read from? Ive looked, but just curious.

Honestly all I did was change the guys oil put new plugs and battery in his van. He is 87 and honestly I wasn't doing it for any thing I just knew he was having problems with his van and wanted to help him out. His wife died recently and he has been having problems. As I was leaving he pretty much forced this gun on me. Said he didnt want it anymore. Something inside told me it was a good idea to just take it and not argue.

Since your new with guns and you got yourself something that makes a really big bang why don't you sent it my way and I'll give you a .22 youth rifle

Sent from my SCH-I545 using Rollitup mobile app

Last I heard, 357 mag was #1 in "one shot stops", which is why the police used it so long. Evan Marshall wrote a book about it. Federal 125g JHP was the most effective round.
I personally use it for home defense & feel it is more than adequate. (Ruger gp-100)

So it seems from the responses ive got a decent gun. Im going to take it to the range tomorrow and give it a whirl. I used to hunt and fish a lot as a kid but besides .22 plinkers and one round through a desert eagle .50 (which wasnt much fun for a 13 year old) my gun experience has all been rifles and shotguns not handguns.

LOL Now wait just a minute I am curious! Why does everyone keep stealin' my name! My first gun, and still favorite, is my Mossberg 500. There is nothing like pumping a round to discourage bad behavior in my neighborhood.

If you use a shotgun for home defense, never use anything larger than #4 buckshot. Otherwise you could accidentally shoot through walls and/or entire houses.
Hmm... got the bad guy, my dog in the next room and the neighbors truck -- in his garage! Oops

It's good but I fucking hate revolvers especially .357 Magnum and higher they make my ears ring like a bastard. But Glocks are the shit for pistols but I still like an AK the best.

AK (7.62x39) is a terrible choice for home defense! Notorious for over penetration. Stopping power is inferior to AR15 5.56mm.
