Anyone ever try this? Re: high temps.

I've got a little 8 x 6 x 8 walk-in closet that has been my grow room for a few years. Usually I grow outside in the summer, but this year I've got a few inside and the heat I could see being an issue. Don't want to fork out big bucks for AC, so....I'm trying this:

I've got a 4-inch passive air-in ducting coming into my room from outside. Also, I've got two 110 cfm fans sucking the air out. The room is sealed so the passive air flow is good and strong. I'm going to fill a bucket with ice and have that passive air pointed right at the ice bucket. Have no idea how well this will cool things, but it's worth a try (5 bucks for two bags of ice). If it works, though...even knocking it down a few degrees, I'll be golden.

Its worth giving it a try but i highly doubt the air passing near/through the ice will have enough time to cool down even 1 degree.

Would it not cost a lot to keep replacing the ice? Say 1 bag lasted a day, then it would cost 17.50 for 1 week, 75.00 for 1 month...

i used one of these kool cube humidifiers you can fill it with cold water twice a day they are £600 new in uk i got one from ebay for £20 second hand as i was the only bidder with no reserve but it may be a bit powerful for the size of your grow room it is quite large at around 4 feet high but you can attach it to a thermostatic computer. thats what i did when the room got too cold it switched it off and on when warm again. the computer i used was an atc800 or the atc800+ which you can find on ebay usa.

i used a controllable dehumidifier at the same time to keep my room at 40% humidity and 29C my room was 10 feet x 10 feet by 7 high.

I've got a friend who can get me free ice. But I don't think it would all melt in a day, though I can't be sure yet. Will know soon about that, and how significantly a temp drop I can get. Even two degrees (celcius where I'm from) would be helpful.

weegogs: Very cool (pun intended), but 600 pounds is what an ac can cost, so.... I mean, if I could get it for 20 I'd get in now, but that's unlikely. I'm going to see how this bucket of ice works. I just can't believe nobody has tried it before to either tell me I'm just crazy, or crazy like a fox.

he will soon get pissed off with you asking for free ice on a daily basis.

well the cool cube works on the same principle but it blows air through the cold water, it is very quiet and cheap to run and has 3 speeds and will easily cool a room 80 feet by 80 feet in no time in hot weather at he same time as adding moisture to the dry air making you feel comfartable. believe me it is better than air conditioning because of the energy saving account.
it is also portable and is maintenance free.

Well if the ice bucket doesn't work it'll be something I look into.

Nah, it was his suggestion! Plus, I could fill a 7-day cooler with ice and have a fairly robust amount on hand for a few weeks. These coolers are a bit pricey, but they work.

PJ: Good to know.

I just took a peak in my grow room (lights are off in the day), and the bucket of ice has dropped the temps in there a few degrees. Enncouraging, but the real test will come overnight when the lights (just one 400 HPS) go on for 12 hours. Normally, at the end of that cycle it's about 32 celcius in the room, depending on the outside air temps on any given day).

Well, let it be known that 2 bags of ice in a bucket will melt to water in about 6 hours in a room that's 23 celcius. Clearly, this would not be an effective way to keep a room cool on any kind of permanent basis; however, it would be okay in a pinch if the temperature became temporarily too high (which is the case in my room; it only gets too hot on days that are too hot).
