I think I'm going to head to Rona and see what I can come up with. But I really want to stick with the bare-essentials, since there is a high likelihood I will grow consecutive males, fuck up, and/or lose interest.
I'd like to stay under $300, and the cost of a ballast is looking to be pushing more than half that out of the gate.

do you think for a one plant grow you need to invest in HID lighting? why not just start with CFL's and see if you keep interest in it? especially since its such a small grow. if you were planning to expand soon id say invest in a ballast for HID, but then again im a CFL lover.

Most of the self-contained systems I've seen are pretty pricey, and really aren't much better than something you could knock together yourself at 1/2 to 1/3 the cost with only a few hours of work.
If you're really interested in only one small plant, a 70W HPS will give you excellent results, and those can be had for around $60 or so.
