On the main stalk, on the second or third node from the growing tip, are a pair of spear like leaf spurs (stipules). Theres one on each side of the stalk. There tips cross if the branches are opposite at this point. Behind these spurs the first flower buds appear several weeks before the first flower clusters appear on the branches. If the plant is Female this bud continues to grow erect and eventually develops into a Female flower with two Pistils. If it is a male the bud soon droops over and becomes the pod like male Flower.

i think it means that when you see the V shape leaves or what ever, if they start to grow up is a female and if it startes to droop down is a male, before they show sex

Nah it was just using the stipules to relate the location, I'm pretty sure he's talking about preflowers.

the preflowers do show the sex usually right?

i mean i have what looks like to be one part of the plant to look like 1 ball coming out from the side and almost starting to droop, i assume this be male...

lol

thats what i got out of it as well.........

It says behind the spurs the first buds appear, and if its female these FLOWERS grow up and if its male they grow down, why would they call stipules buds.

Heres the Full Paragraph from the Book.

I'm pretty sure that hes talking about preflowers on outdoor plants, because they show up a few weeks before they go into flower. Most indoor growers never let the plant mature enough to get these preflowers, so they just look at the flowers after they have cut the light back.

The male will form more of a "claw" shape before it becomes a flower, teh female will, as you said, grow a pistil. Looking for the male claw in a very good way of early sexing. Don't know if it's an old indian trick, a botanist over on HG420 (when it was around) had a great sticky post on this same method.

So if you would let them Veg. (indoors) until they pre-flower, this sexing method would be a good indicator?

But if you turn down the lights to 12/12. The stipules flowers, and the branch flowers will flower at the same time?
