Advice for a beginner...

Just use a coco nutrient formula
And cut the recommended dose on the bottle by around a half and work em up from there :)

Dunno if i make jedi status .
Haven't even gave nutes yet but if i make it another week ill post more pics and status of my hopeful healthier plant ....everyone has jedi potential

Substrates that performed better than coco for me;

Sand, hydroton, bagged dirt, pro mix, styrofoam, insulation, gravel, wood chips, agar, lava rocks, air bubbles, nft, fog.
most troublesome substrate seen on RIU=coco
any questions?

Water multiple times a day, and make sure you use coco specific nutrients. Or add calmag.

Add more calmag if you use distilled or reverse osmosis water

Don't buy chap coir

it's hydro, not soil.

I've been having great luck with canna coco and I never have to ph my res .

I grew for years as a noob on coco nary any problems and this was before forum days .

Do like project info said .
Use the products the way they where developed and youll be just fine.

Dont use cheap coco unless you rinse it

Do microwave it to kill any pests (or what ever method you prefer)

I used to cut it with perlite as well i only went away from coco because i hate shleping dirt to and fro
when i can just flush everything outside and ball up roots and compost them

And i always had gnats with coco and its messy like dirt :)

Besides those things i loved it

All of this info has been helpful thanks to all you ladies and gentlemen who took time from your day to lend a helping hand and project info i will certainly check out you grow.

The top of your growing media looks totally dry. Seedlings need constant, even moisture. Keep the soil moist, not dry, not soaked, at all times. Use a spray bottle of plain water several times a day. Don’t worry about any nutes until they get a little more established.

Thats crazy you've done better with everything but coco ive read so many diaries about how coco is great for begginers and anyone can grow in it.

I was worried that i'd over water or encourage fungus on the stem you think what 2-3 times a day bout half a cup for seedling or just consistently with a spray bottle?

Incandescent lamps? Do you mean cfl? I'm pretty certain a 90 watt incandescent lamp doesn't produce enough viable light to start a seedling. They don't need much light but that could very well be your issue. Unless you meant compact fluorescent lamp. In which case thats fine

No sir incandescent bulbs basically what everyone use to use in there house before cfl's i have some cfl's natural daylight 5000k but the seedling it was on top of was small and wimpy compared to my seedling that had the incandecent bulb which looked strong and healthy so i changed the rest over to 60w incandecent bulbs i think they may like the heat.

I use rapid rooters and a spray bottle. In your case, I’d wet the media thoroughly once, then use a spray bottle to maintain. Fungus, stem rot, damping off, etc is caused when there isn’t enough oxygen in the soil. That’s why I like the spray bottle and rapid rooters. Keeps the roots moist but never wet. You can achieve this with soil or coir or whatever too, but it’s not as foolproof.

Man some funny stuff in this thread .

When did coco become bad?

When did letting your coco dry cycle a little become bad either lol.

You can feed from day one if you know how ;)

I can show you some seedlings that are sitting in
Mini res with nutes since they had sprouted and popped their first leaves

My rapid rooters just arrived in the mail do you use a tray or keep it in its final pot (sorry if that sounds stupid)

I always feed from seedling. I usually run dwc tho. My coco testers have been a bit of a pain but not really bad at all. I set up a drip thing and have been feeding them calmag and megacrop since day one.

I did however hear not to let coco dry out. Something about it gaining hydrophobic properties. I am certainly not sure of the validity of that info but it gets regurgitated around a bit. My though is since I pretty much went 50% coco 25% perlite 25% hydroton I can feed 3 or 4 times a day to runoff with no signs of overwatering yet. I am hydro only and as such it's just kinda made sense for me to try and treat coco like that.

Edit: I think this was the video I was linked to and someone had a couple papers to back it up. I'll kinda keep looking around. Obviously I have no idea who that guy is or whether he is a reasonable source of info.
