Advantage V. disadvantage CFL's

I have 4 or 5 computers running in my house at any given time, and 2 air conditioners that run now and then. I'm very surprised, but my last electric bill was around $90. right now, about 300 watts of cfl power being used in the grow room. half on 12/12 and the other half on 18/6. I haven't noticed any change at all in the electric bill. I don't expect much change when I get a 600 watt hps either.

Our power bills are significantly higher, and include drawing water from a well that's close to 800' deep.

i cant believe you actually reported it yea it was a bit vulgar it was in response to plantsman comment 220 he was insulting me because i was skeptic so that was the reply owed to him he had no reason to insult me he was just being an ass for no reason so what ever i cant believe a discussion about light intensity got so heated.
So call someone an ass, a fuckwad, or say something meaningful - like they can't spell or formulate proper sentences. I don't give a shit about that crap. When you resort to using such foul and bigotous language, yes, I will report it. It is totally unacceptable and repugnant. The fact that you don't realize it is even more offensive.

i give free windows advise the tools you will need are a hammer and a rifle and a lighter.
I love linux to death! but.. think about it.. all the numb skulls out there using windows.. think about the damage they could do to a more powerful system like linux. 90% of them would be surfing myspace under the root account. maybe start a thread for this.. "what damage could the average person do to a linux box"

ooh, the new hood I made last night.. I go in the grow room and take care of some easy maintanence then leave the room. I see more spots now then ever. worse then looking straight into a blue led. it makes me go half blind with only about 100 watts of power usage, but nope, cfl's aren't intense enough for growing. must be an illusion or something.

42W are the sweet spot in terms of money, space, and power.

but if you're using them for clones, SM, go with the T5s or other straight bulbs. You don't need that much power and they'll be short.

For getting those taken from flowering girls to re-veg, too? Thanks, btw. :)

And thanks, too, to lf for the link. My husband spent a long time going through their product line last night, and he's figuring we can save over 65% on our lighting draw by switching our bulbs. That's a LOT of watts. Watts that I can use to grow. So, thank you.

It's half the price to buy 4 26W CFL's from Wal-Mart with some Y connectors, and then cram them all together. Same lumens, and probably takes up the same amount of space if you do it right. And when one burns out, you don't lose 100% of your light. :bigjoint:
You know, I advise something very similar when it comes to heating aquariums (especially those full of expensive fish and corals, or lifelong pets). Divide the load, divide the powah. Good point. I have a bunch of bulbs on hand, those are going to start going into fixtures around the house as they're all 2700K.

I don't think that CFL's are good only for small grows.. Mine is 12x6 and i've got 18 plants now, with another 12 going in tonight in a modified SOG. As to yield,6 plants..9.5 oz..another plant1.25 lbs..All under CFL. As for temp, even with the CFL's..I'm running 27 150w 2700K bulbs and my temp is from75 at the floor to 95 at ceiling, so unless those Hp are outdoors or in a large room how does it stay so cool? The largest area of savings is in the elecric bill, mine only went up 15 bucks after I switched the entire house to cfl's. No way could I run 4000 watts of HP or MH..Oh yeah..those weights are of Sativa, which does not yeild as much per plant as Indica. As important as the lghts are, the feed plays a huge part in yeild as well.
