Advantage V. disadvantage CFL's

ok.. it's that time of year. most children around here are back in school.

ceestyle's experiment is some good proof that lumens do add, but I have also seen a forum regular post contradicting proof. 2 bulbs next to each other with a tester held in the middle. not very accurate and quickly done, but still enough to keep the question up in the air. do lumens add? we need irrefutable proof. one experiment proving it is a good start, but we need beyond a shadow of a doubt to put it to rest. btw, most threads and posts are just other people giving their opinion, and that doesn't have any weight at all on what is fact.

It's not just one experiment. Look at the 16K lumen thead. You can tell from the intensity map that lumens do add. Otherwise the light intensity would be flat across the middle where all the bulbs are, but it's not.

I'm sorry that noone seems to accept the word of science here, but Al B. Fuct's experiment was obviously flawed.

Think about it - you're telling me that if you have 1 x 1000W HID, it's going to give you more light than 9 x 600W HIDs sitting next to each other? It's a really easy thought experiment.

I'm out. This is a serious waste of my time and energy.

Brilliant, I love internet tough guys...

I couldn't care less about what you do or who you are. I just can't abide stupidity.

wow they removed my post that was a bunch of bravo sierra i was not being a tough guy you were on that high horse and i was just responding and it's not stupidity it's just habit and i am not saying any one is wrong i am just skeptic and nothing more screw a forum that removes a posting if some one is going to talk s**t then that is what is going to happen. unix rules windows sucks deal with it!!!

don't get so angry. I believe the results of your experiment. it's normal science to have a second experiment reproduce the results.

yeah, screw a forum that doesn't allow insulting people by using inane vulgarities that amount to demeaning a person because they're of a different sexual orientation. screw them.

I think this would make complete sense and actually work IF lumens is what mattered to plants. I think it's the lux that matters. like someone said earlier in the thread, you can have a 200,000 lumen lamp at 10 feet away from the plant tops. that bulb is still 200,000 lumens, that doesn't change. the plants still see 200,000 lumens, but, they aren't getting anywhere near the same amount of light with the lamp at that distance. this would mean the plants need more lux and lumens don't matter the slightest bit.
When you responded to my post did you actually read it? I never said lumens mattered, its the intensity of light falling on the foliage. Get yourself a light meter that measures LUX, put it RIGHT next to a 13 watt, 23 watt and 40 watt and it should all be the same.

More than an inch away. everything changes.

i am sure that was not directed at me since fucko the clown started with the insults what ever the fact is that CFL's work great and provide for great lux control.

I hope that doesn't mean me. I'm not insulting anyone. I believe the results, I just ask for more proof to convince me. I'm just that kind of guy. I need a great understanding of what I'm thinking about.

I just made a hood out of roofing flashing last night. pretty sturdy, not to bad for how cheap it was to make. I used flat white spray paint for the inside and now have 4 100 watt equivalent cfl's in it, over 6 plants about 3 inches tall. hard to believe how well it's working. it nicely shades most of the room from the bright light, but if you stick your hand under it, the light intensity is so nice! the plants will love it.

I'm a skeptic too, but how much proof do you need?

The post was obviously directed at whomever starting calling everyone a dirty fag. That shit is just not right. I'm almost positive it was lastfrontier. I reported the post, and it was deleted, as was my response.

I like your avatar. question.. are you a dirty white boy? kidding. I'm sure you know that episode. I love meat wad. mr mister.. lol

my grow has been doing great with just cfl's. one set of lights had a 2 minute foil hood and the other had nothing. the plants have been loving it. my peppers have a great canopy and are fruiting. gotta make a hood for that light now too, will work even better.

Your peppers are setting fruit under CFLs? I'm coming in REALLY late, but have to learn about using light to grow this plant. You're using 6,500K CFLs, yes? I wish more manufacturers would note what the color temperature was of their lights.

I have 3 pepper plants in an ebb and flow system. I'm using 2 150 watt 2700k, 2 100 watt 6500k, and 1 75 watt black light cfl for ultraviolet. the plants are about 14 inches tall and so far I picked 2 peppers off one plant that were about 3 to 3 1/2 inches long. way to spicy for me, almost made me cry, but I've been told they have a good taste. I would have more peppers, but I just realized the other day, I don't have bee's in my house... I forgot to manually pollinate them!

I buy them online. They're cheaper and always have the color index. Ebay worked, but there are tons of lighting stores.

does anyone use cfl black lights? I have one to try out, but haven't had a past grow to compare it to yet. it seems to get hotter then normal cfl's, but still controllable.

i cant believe you actually reported it yea it was a bit vulgar it was in response to plantsman comment 220 he was insulting me because i was skeptic so that was the reply owed to him he had no reason to insult me he was just being an ass for no reason so what ever i cant believe a discussion about light intensity got so heated.

Man, lastfrontier... GO BACK TO SCHOOL.

Not only is your grammar the worst I have seen since I watched a amputee try to type a letter but you have got to be one of the dumbest F's I have ever had the misfortune to read...

Seriously: it IS a simple concept, it IS a scientific fact and it IS obvious to any grower of any plant.

If you cant understand that I really suggest going back to school or maybe just dont smoke weed anymore, sounds like you probably dont need any help slowing down your brain!! Infact, why not go hunting? Like, I believe, many other brain dead freaks do for fun. Personally I prefer activities which dont make me want to touch my "hunting partners" penis.

Also: (quote) "...I did not get this far in life by just believing some ones opinion" Really? "..this far"??? hahaha, im guessing your not VP of a bank but anyway, as you dont believe someone's opinion I thought i'd give you mine:
I am surprised that you manage to remember where you put shoes...

Sorry man, I had to get that out. You're just so f'in stoopid :dunce:

what a jerk!!!

I missed all that, and I'm glad (for me, sorry for you, don't know what inspired that and I'm not going back now). That site you mentioned doesn't come up for me.

I'm going to start replacing all of the 65W floods that we have in this house with a CFL flood. We have a lot. We also have a LOT of 40W (according to Dave they're 40s, I'm not so sure but they're all over 8' up and I'm not hauling my ass up to each damn light to check... maybe I should, fuck  ) in ceiling fans and those bathroom light bars that use the globes that I'm going to replace. If I can save enough wattage inside for household use, then that will offset the increase in power from growing during winter.

Has anyone ever used those CFL floodlights for growing? I've searched, but haven't found anything (yet).
