What's happening fellas. As we all know, everyone has their own opinions on what works best for drying/curing. As I have not perfected this yet, I decided to do a test with my harvest.nothing crazy scientific, but I learned a lot
Control -
Everything was dried in the same environment - humidity varied from about 60% to 70% the whole time
Temperatures stayed around 68-72 F
There was an exhaust fan running on the lowest setting and a tiny desk fan on the floor, on the lowest setting, to ensure there was some air movement. Nothing blowing on the plants of course.
Everything hang for a full 7 days
Really with this test I was looking for at which point in the drying process should they be manicured and jarred.
The first one to get trimmed was a strawberry lemonade. It was dry and crispy on the outside. Super light weight, you could tell the vast majority of the water had evaporated. Stems were just starting to snap/crack. This one turned out to be the best overall. The smell is fantastic. The buds after jarred evened out the water through the bud and they now have that super sticky, dank feel to them. Flavor is lacking a bit (as is in each plant). I chalk this up to growing conditions as I had some mishaps along the way. Never the less, this proved to be the best one.
Next was a laughing buddha. Almost as dry as the first, but still wet feeling. Fan leaves were crispy but the buds were still damp. This one has the second best smell and consistency to it, but it doesn't have that dank sticky feel. I've been burping this jar and it seems to be getting better, but not even close to the first.
The last 2 were both still fairly wet. Fan leaves wet, and buds still oozing wet, but you could tell it had lost a lot of weight. These both smell like HAY. They don't feel sticky and dank. More of a gritty texture. I am still burping these and these two have shown ZERO improvement.
While not totally scientific, I've gathered that they do need to be sufficiently dried before jarring. Too wet and they smell like hay. Run em till the branches snap, quickly manicure and jar and they come out pretty dank. Jar top soon, and you get that hay smell.
7 days, 60-70% humidity, till the branches snap and the fan leaves and buds are crispy worked very well for me.
Next time I'll ensure the whole grow stays on point and am sure I'll get the flavor profiles as well Next time.
