8'x8' led light setup 2500$ budget

It can definitely be done for much less. Five double-row 4 foot strips - or even four run at higher current per - and the HLG-480H-48A would handle a 4x4 quite well.
my setup is 800watts, your scenario is only 500watts at best

is that going to perform as well as a 600 hps which is what a lot of people use in a 4x4 area?

You only need 30-40w sqft with LED 500w kn a 4x4 is 31wsqft. With 5 or 6 you could bomb that up to around 650w

For a 4x8, but he's trying to fill an 8x8.

OP, don't be daunted by the difficulty of DIY. There's a wealth of information here on this forum, and many more resources online. You would have no difficulty in finding plenty of people who would be happy to walk you through the process of building a COB/board/strip light. Personally, I'd recommend strips for cost and ease-of-use reasons. Have a look at the following:

Sorry, my mistake...
8x8 8x8 8x8 :)

Properly used, 500 watts of F series strips will easily and definitively outperform a 600w HPS by a wide margin.
i grow with both leds and hps. so i must not be doing something right, cuz my leds have not come close to producing 20-20 ozs out of 4x4 area. my hps can do that pretty consistently with the right plants.

in all honesty i haven't run a few strains under the leds that i need to.

i just got an rdwc setup running under my hps. have 3 plants to harvest and then i am going to build another rdwc setup to cover another 4x4 section right next to the hps.

if i could ever get the two 4x4 areas on the same cycle (same plants at the same size/age) i would love to run a side by side of my 800w of led vs the 600 hps.

i'm still not sold on my leds, but it could be the operator.

if and when i run that test, or at least run the same clone(s) under each light i will really know what works for me. if the LEDS don't outperform the HPS, i will mount all the LEDS on the walls and hang another 600 above.

i have 16 single row f-series samsung strips (3000K and 3500K) with HLG-480H-48A driver and with my frame, wiring, tape and glue, i am into it for aournd 1K and that only covers a 4x4 area.
I thought it was for a 4x4... 1500 would cover a 4x8 easily.

My question is, if the HPS is working why would you use 800w(more) of LEDS?

There are many examples of growers doing much, much better than .7 g/w, here on the forum. I don't mean to offend, but I would definitely consider such results to be user error.

in all fairness and honesty, i had my leds arranged in a vertical configuration. i am changing that to all strips overhead. in fact, i already reconfigured it, but have not yet grown healthy plants in hydro with that setup. that will start in the next few weeks.

the vert configuration and plants with root rot did not yield much. but with that said, i am going to try overhead with healthy plants i know yield well. here's the old setup

Interesting setup but it might be your problem.
I’d be curious to know how it does with everything overhead.

me too. like i said, the vertical run, the plants weren't healthy, but they weren't terrible.

gonna run with them horizontal in hydro and it they compete with my hps, i will be happy.

still intrigued by the vert configuration though...

I think it’d be hard to train them like that but seems like it would or should still be effective.
I guess to really know you would have to take a lot of par readings lol.
They really should be out performing your hps though. I bet they’ll do better horizontal. May have to also train them and grow them differently too. I haven’t grown with hps tho so I really can’t say too much about it.

the idea of going vertical was to beef up the popcorn buds down low that the hps leaves.

i like to harvest a plant and leave the popcorn buds for another week or two to beef them up.

of course they just go in the hash bin anyways.

it's fun trying new stuff. we will see, cuz the experiments are on, lol...
