So im looking to buy a 400 watt hps, and im finding tons of websites offering to sell me one. The problem is that im seeing some starting at $85 all the way too $400. Whats the difference in them?

Im not looking to spend a lot of money. Atleast not on my first grow and i just want some insight before i go on and spending my hard earned money on marijuana haha :D

Oh and can anyone tell me how many plants can i have under a 400watt?

Thanks :D:joint:

Some of the more expensive ones have goodies like air cooled hoods, digital ballasts, and such. The cheaper one's probly have magnetic ballasts, which get much hotter than a digital, and probobly just a reflective sheet metal hood.

It's a 400 watt HPS of course you use it to flower with.

What are you going to Veg with ? You can not run a MH bulb in this setup it is for HPS only.

Go here to get the best set up and customer service. Look into the conversion models because they are the ones that can handle both MH (veg) and HPS (flower) bulbs into the same socket.

I use a 400 watt hps with a cool tube and I can fit a max of 18 plants in 10" square pots. I ususll veg to between 18"-24" before flowering and I remove the bottom 1/3 of vegetation from the plant before flowering. I use the cutoffs for clones. I rotate plants to have a perpetual harvest every 2 weeks. I make 6 colums of 3 plants and it works perfect for my space which is 4'x4'.

How about posting a pic of your set up. Sounds very workable

You'll need ther customer service, look how many people have had problems with their setup. I'd stay away from their stuff until they get their problems worked out.

Don't buy a conversion model because you can buy a magnetic setup and convert it yourself for the price of a switch. Otherwise you are paying an extra $30 - $50 for them to sell you a switch.

I recommend digital over magnetic, the choice is yours.

Have you had problems personally with htg gear ? just wondering cause ive got assloads of their gear as well as equal amounts of other manufacturer's gear & have not had one problem with htg gear.

I think people repeat problems others have reported having with the gear more than actual problems they've had with the gear in an attempt top help.

For a while there it became highly obvious that there were manufacturers/resellers of other gear & people who had a vested interest (hydro shop owners) in bad mouthing htg, these guys popped in & out creating quite a stir over realiability issues.

The thing to remember is that htg sells way more gear than any other reseller, the ebay market is a tough crowd, its not beyond another seller/forum participant to shill.

I personally order from HIDHUT because I have used their stuff for years without problems.

I stay away from EBAY nowadays as it sees to be more crooks than anything. Years ago it was the cat's meow, ebay had a lot of nice people doing the right thing but anymore I stay away from people who sell on there.

I can see your point with other resellers saying stuff as I amazed at how the LED sellers are at badmouthing people on the boards. They are Pro at it, still it seemed a lot of people in agreement with HTG brand having issues.

Dude, read the thread, where I said the specific ballast I recommended not all of them.

Are you going to give some smartass answer about a conversion bulb ?

Are you going to tell me about adding a switch to a magnetic ballast to burn an MH in an HPS ballast ?

What's your point ?

ive had a cheap 400 watter from htg for 2 years now with the magnetic ballast and other than replaceing a bulb every couple grows thers no problems that ive had.. one of the things that jacks up the price is the enclosed hoods which i dont use point is it works great and i havnt had any problems and would recomend htg to anyone ther quick, discreet and the ppl ive herd that had problems had those problems fixd with no hassel or an upgrade in some cases but me personally ive never had a problem and i pull about 8-10 oz. evry 3 months off of this light and im quite happy with it

Oh for sure,i too believe that htg has had problems, ive seen where reliable mebers have reported problems with their gear, thing is that like anything else when you sell 100 times as much as the compitition your going to have more faulty gear that needs service,i'd be willing to bet their percentage of malfunctioning gear is no higher than other resellers with different brands, they just sell more so it looks like it.
