24 hour lighting

So a friend has new batch of plants coming up. Is it necessary to have the lights on all the time? I have heard mixed reports of 14, 18 and 24 hour time periods. What is the best way to ensure the growth of female plants?

GROW FAQ. at the top of the page.

you do not need to have the lights on all the time.. your not suppose too.. plants need time to vegetate while in the dark. your light cycle can be 12/12 or whatever depending on what type of lights u use ect. hps cfl blah blah blah. Female plants need the same treating as male plants. Basically just give them what they need and they'll grow..

What I've read via High Times is that a plant will stay in the Veg state with about 14 hrs of light per day, depending on the strain. However, plants will grow "twice" as fast when under 24 hours of light. One Guy said that 20 was OK, and he saved a little on the electric bill. Response was that he may have saved a few pennies, but compared to 24 hour growth rate, it makes no sense. Go with the 24. MH lites are best for veg states.

Yeah, don't do the 12/12 light cycle until your plant is ready to begin flowering. I've had mine on 24/7 with no problems whatsoever.
Your friend needs to give his babies time to mature. 24/7 or 18/6 is recommended.
