Harris uses democracy summit to call for passage of voting rights laws
Harris, in remarks to world leaders delivered from the White House complex, cited the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol and "anti-voter laws" passed by GOP legislatures as looming threats to democracy domestically.
"In our democracy and every democracy, a representative government is foundational, and the right to vote is fundamental," Harris said. "And so, ensuring that every eligible American can access that right is a top priority for our administration, and an effort that I am proud to lead. We know that the right to vote cannot be taken for granted. At every turn it must be safe-guarded and strengthened."
Harris noted the Department of Justice has sought to block voter suppression efforts, and she pointed to executive actions President Biden has taken to increase voter registration information and ensure equal access to the ballot. But she urged Congress to do its part by passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
"Today, as the world watches, the president and I reiterate our call for swift passage of these bills," she said. "We know our work at home will make us stronger for the world. We also know that the strength of our democracy is tied to the strength of democracies worldwide."
While Harris and President Biden have condemned both the insurrection and state-level laws that critics say restrict the right to vote, her comments on a global stage were notable as the administration pushes for congressional action. Biden's own remarks focused more broadly on global threats to democracy.

Judge clears way for legal challenge to Georgia's restrictive voting law
A federal judge on Thursday rejected a request to dismiss a legal challenge to Georgia’s restrictive GOP-crafted voting law, clearing the way for the suit to proceed.
The lawsuit, filed this spring by the Georgia NAACP and other groups, alleges that the state’s new voting limits threaten to illegally suppress the vote of minority groups.
Legal challenges immediately arose after Gov. Brian Kemp (R) in March signed a sweeping elections bill that limits the use of ballot drop boxes, adds photo ID requirements for absentee voting and imposes other restrictions.
Among the defendants are Georgia’s Republic Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, the Georgia Republican Party and other state officials, who in May asked for the case to be tossed.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Jean-Paul Boulee, a Trump appointee, rejected that request.
Without ruling definitively on the merits of the allegation, Boulee found the challengers had made a plausible claim that the Georgia law was designed with a discriminatory purpose in violation of constitutional protections and the 1965 Voting Rights Act — or could produce that result.
Boulee on Thursday also indicated that he was considering a move that would consolidate the Georgia NAACP suit with other similar lawsuits filed by voting rights advocates and other plaintiffs.
The Georgia voting law is among dozens of GOP-backed measures being considered by state legislatures across the country after former President Trump lied repeatedly about the 2020 presidential election being stolen through widespread voter fraud, a claim that is not supported by evidence.
The complaint filed by the Georgia NAACP alleges that the Georgia voting law arose from a “concerted effort” by Kemp and Republican state lawmakers “to suppress the participation of Black voters and other voters of color.”

Nope what is racist was all the ways that we had made non white people second class citizens for the decades in our society that many of our citizens grew up in. Those problems caused have impacts to this day, like not having the necessary paperwork to easily get a ID.

Roybal-Allard, 80, has begun calling Democratic allies and friends about her retirement, the sources said.
“She is an icon,” said a fellow Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) member.
She becomes the 23rd House Democrat to signal they are not running for reelection in a difficult election cycle where Republicans are well-positioned to win back the majority.
Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.), a leader of the moderate Blue Dog Democrats, announced earlier Monday that she was retiring in 2022 to spend more time with her young children. Over the weekend, there were also reports Rep. Albio Sires (D-N.J.) plans to retire.
Roybal-Allard's district maintained its strong Hispanic majorities through two redistricting processes, after the 2000 and 2010 censuses, but the draft proposals approved by California's redistricting commission would have Roybal-Allard drawn into fellow California Democratic Rep. Alan Lowenthal's district.
Still, Roybal-Allard's retirement almost certainly won't put at risk any Democratic seats.

I think they should push harder on current stories, looking at cnn and politico, which should be friendly territory, that isn't happening. Where's the stories on the economy being great, extending student loan debt moratorium, reducing how often we drone people, etc.

4 Georgia Ballots Cast for Deceased Voters in 2020 Election
Four Georgia absentee ballots in the 2020 presidential election were cast in the names of dead voters, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Election investigators found that all four absentee ballots had been sent in by relatives, the Journal-Constitution reported Monday.
The State Election Board referred the cases to the attorney general's office this month after investigators reviewed dozens of allegations, the newspaper said. The probe confirmed that most of the ballots in question had been returned by voters who were alive.
Earlier this month, Trump-endorsed Georgia gubernatorial candidate David Perdue, the state's former Republican senator, said he would not have signed the certification of the electoral votes for Biden until allegations of voter fraud were investigated.
"The problems in the 2020 election started long before any votes were cast," Perdue said in a statement to Newsmax. "They started when [Gov.] Brian Kemp caved to [activist] Stacey Abrams and the Democrats, giving them control of our elections."
