Purple D this morning. She was at 55 days from 12/12 (just shy of 8 weeks), with the last 20 of those days flushing, and the last 36 hours in darkness...

A few bud shots:

And, the moment we've (I've) all been waiting for, branch #1 comes off:

I have to admit, it didn't hurt (me) as much as I thought it would :)

More pics to come...

Biggest branch before trimming off the sugar leaves:

And after trimming with my trusty fiskars:
p_oct23.x11.jpgp_oct23.x13.jpgp_oct23.x12.jpg

It was STICKY. Didn't have the patience to make "finger hash" so I used rubbing alcohol afterward to wash my hands and clean the fiskars. Highly recommended for all first time harvesters: fiskars (or other decent fine point shears) and rubbing alcohol for cleaning up.

Ok, here are the prize shots...

Purple D, hanging in the dry box:
p_oct23.x14.jpg
Wet weight (including all the stems) was about 16 grams (just over 1/2 ounce)

Purple D's sugar leaves:
p_oct23.x15.jpg
(wet weight of the sugar leaves was about 4 grams, just over 1/8 ounce)

Not the most impressive yield, I admit, but for my first grow, given my stealth & size limitations, and just 150w of cfls split between two plants, it's not too bad. Plus, this is for personal use, so it should last me a few good weeks assuming the cure goes well. For the next few days, i'm keeping the dry box inside closet facing away from the light (which is focused all on Sour D now), and with indirect ventilation. I'll be checking for dry buds / snappy stem before I start the cure. Meanwhile, Sour D has another 3-5 days to go...

Any comments/quesitons on my harvest?!?!

Looks awesome bro, congrats on your first harvest!

Personally with my limited experience I like to let the buds get crispy on the outside then start the cure. The first time I waited until the stem broke and it was a little to dry for my liking.. Its up to you just thought I would give you my opinion.. Great job! +Rep

oh yeah, i remember you saying that. i'll wait until the buds are crispy and the stem is almost snapping but not quite. i'll also weigh them... i hear that they end up reducing to about 30% of the original weight, right? so maybe i'll dry until 50% weight and then start curing? sound reasonable?

Yea that sounds about right from what I've read. You will know when the buds are cripsy on the outside, it didn't take much time at all for mine, 5-6 days..

Hey man nice looking purple, but I'm still waiting to see what your sourD is going to look like
thanks paranoiakills. here's a preview of sour d -- she's been getting nothing but water for the past 2 weeks, and clearly getting her nute needs from the leaves. these pics are from yesterday and this morning (58 days from 12/12)...

for travel/stealth/random reasons. i'm probably going to have to harvest sooner than ideal -- probably in the next few days. but if you guys think i'm way off on that, let me know, i could try to figure out a plan b :)

thanks!

thanks

Looking dank bro!!

It looks like you could push it another week but if security is an issue I would just chop it.. Its close enough but could go another 7-10 probably IMO..

On a side note, I chopped my shortrider down a little early and see turned out perfect :) Do you have a microscope at all?

hey thanks for the feedback man! that's good to hear about your shortrider.

the issue with mine is less about security and more about not screwing up the cure process. there's a 5 day period (nov 13-17) that i won't be able to touch or move the buds, so to me that means i should chop by oct 30, to allow for 5-7 days of hanging/drying plus 5-7 days of jarring/burping OR paper baggin, just so they're dry enough by nov 13 that i don't have to worry about it.

if i could figure out a good way to store them for 5 days even if they're still a little wet (without over drying or risking mold), then that would solve my problem and i could let sour d go for a little longer. any suggestions?

by the way, i do have a 60x scope, and i will take a good look at the trichs today and report back :leaf:

I would try to plan on hanging them to dry for that 5 days if possible, that would give her a couple more weeks to mature to her fullest!! Then when you come back you should be ready to start the cure.. I can't really think of any other ideas but that might work if you can pull it off..

hey, that's a really good idea. so you don't think i would risk over drying in that case? i guess that wouldn't be much worse than chopping too early...

thanks for the suggestion. this would give sour d two extra weeks to mature... would it be good to add molasses at this point, then? and how does one go about doing that (like, how much molasses per gallon, does it just mix in, etc).

ok, i went for it. when i was trimming i accidentally trimmed off a little piece of bud, a budlet if you will:
s_oct23.nug.jpg

it had been drying in a paper bag for the last 4 days... and tonight it looked just dry enough, so i :bigjoint: or something like that, and...

nice...

calm, hazy, not too strong, nor very tasty, but nice. body and mind floating. face stuck in smile. probably won't last too long, but long enough. clear indica qualities.

i know it will improve with time. but, totally worth it, both the early consumption of this budlet and this whole crazy endeavor.

Congrats on the smoke!! Sounds like some good stuff, I just ran out of my stash so blow some my way haha..

If its only 5 days it should be perfect, just make sure its in a cool dark spot with decent ventillation and it should dry pretty slow.. I would rather have the bud be a little dry then have mold on it and waste some if not all of it, you know..

I think the molasses idea is perfect, 1tablespoon per gallon seems to do the trick for my girls!! Just make sure you use all of what you mix because it will go bad within a day or two and smell horrid..

Dude how did you get so many little colas?? My sourD is just a huge stalk with one big fat cola...and other buds going up the stalk but it don't look like that. But I kinda like the idea of multiple smaller ones better! Did you top your plant off? As you know I have been following your post, I'm just busy can't really look back and fish for my answer. I have a thread in grasscity.com I have the same name paranoia kills, I only have one thread if you have the time check it out let me know what you think. If you don't have time don't sweat it bro, smoke on!
