1000W HPS lighting question

let me start off by saying that my grow room is actually going to be my closet... it has a width of about 7ft and a depth of 22.5in. i have been searching the internet for a decent priced 1000W HPS light system, i found this 1000 HPS Econo Wing Grow Light System for only $220... has anyone ever tried this or heard anything about it? is it any good? if anyone knows of a better light system for a price like that please let me know, because i really feel clueless on what is good and what i need... thats why i went with a light system instead of just selecting all the seperate parts myself.

after i decide which strain to go with i plan to set up about 18 8" pots, 2 rows with 9 pots in each... according to this website, 1000W HPS cover a primary area of about 5ft x 7ft... so the setup i choose should be fine, correct?

any help and suggestions with this would be very useful! i did read in several other threads that it is a bad idea to buy the ballst online, but i have been everywhere around here and there are no shops that carry them... thanks in advance

I'd go with something with a little more umph in it such as 2 600 watters here is why.

1 x 1000w is producing 140,000 lumens

at 5x7 you need to cover 35 square feet

140,000/35 =4000 lumens per square foot

while that will get the job done the better lumens per square foot generally the better yield.

2 600 watters will produce 180,000 lumens at a minimum(90k) or up to 190k if both bulbs are rated at 95k

180,000/35(square feet) = 5142 lumens per square foot

still not great but much better results...personally mine is 7000+ lumens per square foot and if I decide to add two more 600 watter HPS lights I have in the house already I'll be upwards of 9000 and 10,000 lumens per square foot.

Like Potlike said, one 1000watt light wont cover that area very well. Go with 2 600watt lights, or like 3 400watt lights. A 1000watt light will cover a 4'x4' area very well, a 5'x5' area ok, and 2'x7' area like crap. You can order ballasts from HTG supply for really cheap, especially the ballast kits. If I were you I'd start with a like 250 or 400watt grow, get some experience, and go from there.

i agree, and i have a 1000, mine fits good in its space, but eventually i want a larger grow area, so in hindsight i wish i had gotten 2-600's....

never get below a 1000 watter if your going to do it do it right. I have done mult grow with 400,600,1000 watts and no matter what 1000 always out preform. As for where to buy one you should go to the ebay store of High Tech Garden Supply you should be happy there its an awesome online store. Here is some info you will want to know about 1000 watters they produce 3200 btu's of heat you need to keep the hood cool to eliminate alot of that heat. Something I do is have one 1000 watter for every 4' by 4' area Lumens per square foot for 4x4 is 8750 lumens sq ft. As for your pot at least get 3 gallon pots you need a good size growing medium for each plant I use 4 gl pots but 3 is ok.
Hope shit works out

we all had mentioned MULTI 600'S, multi 1000's would be too much for the space mentioned above... dont get me wrong i like my 1000, but in hind sight i would have gone multi 600's for the space i'm working in..

Yeah, more than one 1000watt there would be way too much, and just one would be way too little. If the space were 4'x7', sure go with 2 1000watt lights. But its only 2' wide. Get the 2 600watt lights for your space, or break it in half, and only use like 2'x3' and get one 600watt light. I use my 600watt in a 3'x2' area and pull like 10-14oz off of 6 plants. With my veg area going too, I can harvest this amount every 2 months. Which is plenty for me to smoke.

I have that exact same light it works great. The ballast get really hot so keep it out of your grow room. 1000 watts in small spaces must be air cooled as well, I grew in about the same size space and even with a cool tube temps would get up into the 90's by the end of the light cycle I solved the problem by checking my girls at the same time everyday right about half way through the light cycle so when I opened the doors the temps would drop back into the 70's. Good luck bro

daniel it will grow ... just depending upon the space you are growing will determine how efficient the light will be for your specific grow.

what are the dimensions of your desired grow space?

It took years of hard work and a couple of years to attain a horticulture degree to get where I'm at. I'm going to be adding Co2 this next grow, so I'm hoping to get up over the pound mark this time around. Thanks for the kind words.

WHEN WOULD 1000WATTS BE OVER KILL? I HAVE 2 PLANTS (UNDER CFL) (I KNOW I'M A LOSER) AND THINKING ABOUT BUYING HPS. WHAT WOULD BE BEST FOR A 2-4 PLANT SET UP? THANKS GUYS!!!kiss-ass

For 2-4 plants, I would build any where from a 2'x'2 cab to a 3'x2' cab, and run 250-400 watts in the 2x2 or 400-600 watts in the 3x2. I grew in a 2x2 cab for awhile with 400watts, and would get like 6oz from it. Now if its your first grow, don't expect that. In your first grows, expect somewhere around 1/4 gram per watt. After you get it down a bit better, you can get closer to 1/2-2/3 a gram per watt. And if you're badass, you can get to 1 gram per watt.

I'm high and reading through old posts... noticed some incorrect info:

1000 Watts: 145,000 lumens
600 watts: 95,000 lumens

145,000/1000= 145 lumens per watt
95,000/600= 158 lumens per watt

158>145 AND will not create as much heat as 1000 watters

Keeping this in mind when multiple lights are needed the 600 watter can get closer thereby getting more usable lumens as well as being more efficient.

I need to get offline now.

I run 6 1000watters, cool tubes, bringing air in from outside through 6" venting thru the cool tubes and exhausting to the attic, I also have to run a 16,000 btu ac to keep the room at 75deg. For the closest I would run 2 600watter due to the dimensions and cool tubes due to heat also some mylar. GOOD LUCK!

Depending on how big of an issue heat is, you may not want to use mylar. Mylar will add extra heat to your grow space. If you want reflective material that doesn't cause heat, look into the black and white poly, or simply painting your walls.
