How NOT to burn seedlings

i'm looking at the ocean forest from fox farm and everybody seems unanimous in that for a seedling it is WAYYYYY to hot for your baby. so i want to know what would be a good cheap soil while i have my babies in a solo cop. i should mention that i'm growing 4 plants in 5 gallon pots and will be using a 50/50 mix of forest green and happy frog for the final transplant mix. with that being sad, would i be able to use 100% happy frog soil for the seedling stage without burning the plants or should i but a bag of scotts moisture control or something from home depot for the meanwhile. i really dont' want to buy a whole bag essentially to fill 4 solo cups which i'm going to change the soil a month later.

dont use the scotts. a plain seed starting mix like pro mix or you can even get miracle gro seed starter mix from home depot if thats all you can get.

I like Miracle Gro Seed Starting mix because it's cheap and available just about everywhere. Fox Farm Light Warrior is another good pick. While not nearly as cheap as MG or FF, you could make your own seed starting mix using peat moss and/or coir with up to 10% worm castings (NPK 1-1-1). When using peat it's a good idea to add perlite or vermiculite, because when peat gets dry it tends to repel water. Coir doesn't need perlite because when dry it soaks up water like a sponge.

I also recommend going with one gallon over your 8oz solo cups. Grow bags usually go for $3.00 US, but if that's to much, upcycle a water or milk jug or use a 99 cent reusable grocery bag.

no no no...
miracle gro!?!?please do not put this product on anything you are consuming..its just nasty ass salts you do not need..
i run my veg plants in happy frog until Flowering is initiated.. just feed them straight water for the first few weeks-if they are seedlings..then just a really cut down veg feed and so on up to a full veg feed...
stick with nutriants that are plant specific to cannabis or Organic...your results will be night and day to an MG regiment..

I use FFOF for my seedlings...as long as you don't overwater you will see no issue. All it takes is one person saying something and it gets taken down as fact, even though other people might not have even tried it themselves. I have used it for starting seeds and clones...had very few issues...it is a great soil...but if you overwater it you will see over feed symptoms.

not true at all. mg seed starter mix fertilizer analysis is .05 - .05 - .05 and the nutes dont lost much longer than a week or two. i think its funny that you say the nutes in there are not cannabis specific. what nutes are cannabis specific? i know its not organic but you will see no difference if you start in this and transplant to ffof.

I used ffof on all my seadlings but it did burn my blue cheese a little so I switched to happy frog for seedlings.

i found the light warrior grow medium from fox farm yesterday and theres a place like 20 min away that sells fox farm products. i can't find super soil or pro-mix anywhere locally, at least to close. distributors are like an hour away so i'm good with the fox farm for now since its the most organic(i know of) that i can get locally that is "cannabis" specific. when i start the germinating i might have some questions about the feeding schedule for the seedling stage on the fox farm site because i kinow the grow big fert. out of the trio pack is less than 1-1-1 so it won't overfeed the growing seedlings

Burpee seed starting mix is a coir based seedling mix they sell at lowes. the addition of the coir to the ffof is better than perlite and makes a grate mix. Add some worm castings too.

I have always had this problem and I love to use my nutes. So I finally switched to royal gold basement mix and let me tell ya the shit is bomb! Planted clones last monday and I will be flipping on friday. I know its not the soil doing the growing but its not hot and lets me get in there right away with thebeej's nutritional program. The soil has great water retention and am definatelky going to use it going forward. Especially once i set up my top feed system. In the past I have used the foxfarm soils( no consistency anymore, hydrolock, HOT!) and roots original (hot) and Im sticking with the royal gold eventhough its only been a week

sounds good bro. i found pro-mix also and was going to go with that mix instead of the light warrior for the seedling since its WAY cheaper and i don't really need nutes in the seedling stage which i already know which fertilizers i will have and use for the seedling stage. i am considering going with the pro-mix and mixing in some perlite, worm castings and bat guano to the mix instead of doing the fox farm 50%/50% mix now that you mention that it is hot all around even for veg./flowering plants

i think thats the way to go. use straight pro mix for the seedlings and mix your own organic soil yourself. dont forget the lime for your amended mix if you decide to go that way.

its interesting. i wonder why quite a few people say that its too hot for seedlings. not that the heat will kill the plant but people just haven't recommended doin it
