If you are really worried about the smell your gonna have to pony up the cash for a proper inline fan and carbon filter. Yes a DIY one will work but a premade filter and inline fan are the way to go.

On a side note you will never have to worry about over doing the C02 with a DIY option. They will indeed produce some C02 but never enough to kill your plants.

What kind of nutrients you working with? Many will tend to agree that the true taste and smell comes from organic nutrients or additives. So what cha working with on the nutrients?

In what way are you thinking it can be bad? The only thing I can think of is maybe you will get a extra bit of light reflection from a water spot.... But that is a pretty slim chance I guess. You have the dull side up on the aluminum foil right?

There is no straight answer. It depends on your pot size, soil mixture, soil additives ect.. Pretty sure the general rule of thumb is to just water until it comes out the bottom of the pot
