where i live this happens all the time so to gaurd my ballasts i use inline high wattage surge suppressors to keep this from happening.... we've had plenty spikes and no ballast dead yet in 3 years. i use one surge suppressor on each light. now the suppressors tend to blow after a year's usage...

yeah like you said it depends on how many u got... a 600w is good for a 5'x5' area of plants so do the math n decide... doubling up from there may not really be worth it unless you are using strategic lighting to light the undersides of the plants. 25w of lighting per 1x1 is my motto
