well, it's up and running. It's burning at least as bright as the 600w bulb beside it!! Now when my new 600w hortilux bulbs come in I'll have a pair of spankin new ones.........going from 1000+600 to 600+600.......thinking of adding my current single 600w as well!!
I've been running 1600w with two lamps on a 5'x9' garden, if I add the third I can go 1800w with three lamps & give each 3x5 area 600w, does this sound like it's worth the added draw for this size garden? (only 200w more than before)
so tell me did u skeet your drawers slightly just before u plugged it up thinking it would blow?

eh, just pullin your leg man but i wouldnt waste my energy money on 200w bro... just wait for your order to come in and you'll be running full force... also look into getting highbay or lowbay MH warehouse lighting off of craigslist they work just as well for a fraction of the price and most come with bulbs!

....alls good bro, I was really worried about the ballast, not so much the bulb, just a real bitch the way this worked out.

so, you think it would be worth the extra few bucks to add the other light? I wasn't sure if it was overkill or not based on the size of my garden.

I was going to get rid of the 1000 & put the single 600 in reserve, & replace both with the new twin 600.
Well.......as I get home with the new ballast & cords, I go on ebay & order 2 eye hortilux bulbs for my new PRECIOUS!...then, it begins to rain...........HARD!! Then lightning strikes & I hear my light relay "CLACK", I go look & see my 600 coming back up to power, but nothing in the 1000.
I unplugged it and waited, and waited, then tried again.......NOTHING!!SHIT!!!
So here I am with 3 usable 600w light fixtures, but only 1 bulb!! However, I have the bulb from the 1000!!!

yeah like you said it depends on how many u got... a 600w is good for a 5'x5' area of plants so do the math n decide... doubling up from there may not really be worth it unless you are using strategic lighting to light the undersides of the plants. 25w of lighting per 1x1 is my motto

where i live this happens all the time so to gaurd my ballasts i use inline high wattage surge suppressors to keep this from happening.... we've had plenty spikes and no ballast dead yet in 3 years. i use one surge suppressor on each light. now the suppressors tend to blow after a year's usage but its much better to lose those than a light.

Same thing I do. Surge protectectors are alot easier to part with than ballasts. Some can get a bit pricey though, you don't need the $600 one ment for full theater systems and stuff like that. Those are for suckers. I've paid anywhere from $12 for a 4 outlit surge protector (mind you it would be a good idea to only run one, just to be on the safe side. Be a shame to cheap out on the one piece of equipment that will protect one of you're mose important things) to $99 for a 11 outlet "monster" surge protector.

On the other side though, if you really have the money it wouldn't be a bad idea to shell out for some that are a bit priceyer. They are ment for home theater systems, with gold platted tips for a better connection, picture, or sound, and some come with a speaker surge protector where the audio line goes through it as well. But they do have some neat fetures, like colour coding and an audible alarm. But alot of them come with a warrenty not only on itself, but also on the equipment you were running through it, in case it got fried. I had one for my home theater system that fried about 25,000 total equipment and I didn't pay a cent for my new set up. I think on that one the warrenty for itself and the equipment was up to $100,000.

In all, I guess it's really what your willing to put up front for you're equipment, but to be honest the only surge protector I've had that has not protected like it was suppost to, was the pricey one. So you do the math and make you're own judgment.

You can find them at home hardware, future shop, best buy, wall-mart ect ect.

.......well, everything went well last night with the 1000w bulb burning in the 600w fixture.
I have to say though, that I did check on it more times than I care to admit....couldn't help myself, I mean, I can't believe how this played out! Get a spankin' new rig, bring it home, sit down to order new bulbs online because the grow shop is WAY overpriced on quality bulbs, and in a matter of minutes I'm forced to deploy the new unit without the proper bulbs!
Being a total noob, I imediately started freaking out about my garden wasting away from lack of light, as the new bulbs won't arrive for about a week.( only 600w looks like a candle burning over a garden that's 5'x9', with 58'' plants in it!!)........well, I think it's all going to be just fine, the 1000w bulb is working great & I have learned a trivial fact that may serve me again sometime, as I won't EVER consider getting rid of a lighting rig again unless I have at least one back-up per working rig already!
...............day 46 of 2nd flower cycle, thank goodness I had a spare light!!!!!!!

Do you have a journal I can cheack out or anything? I'd love to see how she grows!! Also, did a little research, and one of the future shop representatives I talked to on the phone said even if you buy a shitty 12 dollar surge prtector, they offer insurence for a couple extra coin up front. like 15 bucks for a year up to $25,000 kind of thing. Might be something to look into
