Right, lets start with an intro...

So this isn't my first cab. My first can be seen below in all its various stages. Throughout its life it's been tweaked, tweaked, and tweaked again, sometimes adding stuff, sometimes getting rid of stuff.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

^^^^ (cheap reflector, little extraction + intakes - generally not going to work!)

^^^^ (Upgraded to air cooled hood - still using computer fan for intake - still not cutting it)

^^^^ (Upgraded intakes to inline fan, added automated watering system, and added another inline fan to the reflector) - starting to get there

^^^^ (Next came a pull out tray the pots sat on, to make watering easier, inspecting the plants easier)

^^^^ (Still the same cab but messed around with having a veg cab up top, played around with extraction ect, learnt plenty)

^^^^ (Upgraded to a Cool-tube - Testing out CFL's)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's come to the point where i have a pretty good idea of what is/isnt necessary (such as insulation, not necessary!). I've had a few years now to try out different things such as automated watering systems, various methods of growing (training), and different equipment, and i feel its time to build a more permanent bit of furniture.

The old cab was meant to last a couple months, just to get my first grow out the way. It's lasted 3 years, and contrary to what a lot of people might think, i thought i did a pretty shoddy job.

Let me explain.

Although i got lots of nice bud out of it, a few things annoyed me about it since day 1.

Firstly the side panels (walls) were made from wooden flooring underlay, i.e. real thin flimsy, soft sheeting, which could not be screwed into, could not be stuck to anything, and was very fragile.

Secondly, space was not efficiently managed, e.g. the exhaust ducting taking up precious space inside the cab.

Thirdly the mylar (walls) were not flat, and had huge pockets of air behind them.

Forthly, it was super small! even growing 1 plant let alone 2 was quite hard, there was hardly space for fans, the reflector i initially used had to be angled, and yeh, i wanted more space!

Fifthly lots of ideas i had required a new build to allow me to properly execute them, like the pull out tray system thingy.

I'd been waiting and waiting and waiting to finish my most recent grow, took nearly 7 months! So this thread has been a long time coming.

This isn't quite as detailed as i was hoping it would be, but hopefully it'll still help a few people out, inspire a few, and most importantly spread ideas!

If anyone has an input, go ahead, i'm all ears.

Next post is the new build (already 60% done)

Last cab approx dimensions

Footprint (85cm wide x 45cm deep)

Height = 195cm

New cab exact dimensions

Footprint (100cm wide x 80cm deep)

Height (flowering cab = 120cm) - (veg cab = 54cm) - (over-all height = 244cm)

I did a real rough illustration of my plans, with the intention of drawing up a really detailed neat version. I never got round to it, and started building, so this will have to do!

(Take no notice of dimensions) - (Air entering cab's = blue, Air leaving each cab = red)

I built the cab pretty much based on this picture, with a few differences, like the extraction for the flowering cab. Instead of being extracted out the near left side, i've placed a spigot bang in the middle of the top face (see pics)

The whole cabinet had to be designed in such a way that it could quickly and easily be dismantled and put away for storage, so i decided to build in pieces, and use screws throughout, no glue, no nails. For seals i shall use silicon.

Materials Used for cab:

Frame: 2" x 2" treated timber

Sides/walls: 12mm Plywood Sheets

Equipment Used:

Ventilation -

  • 5" Inline fan 195m3/hr - INTAKE entering bottom of cab

• 5" Particle Filter

• 5" Ducting throughout

• 2-3 6" Fans for air circulation

• x1 5" RVK extractor fan 250m3/hr

• x1 5" Prima Klima temperature controlled extractor fan 400m3/hr

• x1 Dual fan speed controller with thermostat (for intake + RVK)

• About x10 5" Spigots all over the place to make things neat.

• MIGHT use a silencer, depending on how well i can insulte the RVK and ducting.

Lighting -

  • Veg cab:

    2ft T5 (4 Tube version)

• Flowering cab:

    x2 5" cool tubes (x1 600WHPS) - (x1 400W MH)

x1 30W UVB Reptile lamp with reflector

Other materials used

  • ORCA grow film - meant to be the best of the best (better be with its price tag!)

• 700mm Telescopic Drawer Runners - with ball bearings, capable of holding 120kg at full extension.

• Light hangers to make raising/lowering lights easy as

^^^^ ORCA Film Label - sounds about right eh?

^^^^ Raw Plywood

^^^^ Raw Timber

^^^^ Constructing the side wall piece of the jigsaw

^^^^ Top Face of Veg Cab (*4* in design drawing)

^^^^ Bottom Face of Ventilation/drainage chamber (*1* in design drawing) Bottom face of cab

^^^^ Starting assembly - Bottom piece + 1 side piece

^^^^ Sides/back/top+bottom assembled

^^^^ Rough indication of footprint size

^^^^ Runners Installed

^^^^ Runners full extended

^^^^ Flowering Cab Ventilation -

Middle = Extraction from flowering cab, leading to veg cab

Right = Air coming from RVK from Veg cab and blowing through both cool tubes

Side = Air leaving the cool-tubes to be extracted away

^^^^ Air intake + Drainage Spigots

^^^^ General shot of whole cab without veg cab shelving

^^^^ Extraction chamber Spigots

Left = Air leaving veg chamber

Middle = Air coming from flowering chamber

Right = Air going to cool tubes

So between the left spigot and right spigot there will be the Prima Klima temp controlled Extractor fan

^^^^ Fully assembled so far

I had my go arounds with cab building in the past so I understand the work and money it takes to build one and I have to say that your newest version is looking like it is gonna be a dandy. GREAT JOB!!!!!

Love it, great job! + rep to ya bud!! Check out my recently finished/newly started grows, I built a scrog cab that looks nowhere as clean as yours, but it definitely does the job. Good luck, I'll be following once the grow starts. your last one blew me away

Today was a hard day....

Getting this thing to fit in the alcove was a mission and a half due to insanely bent walls, i had a plane in my hands for about 2hrs straight making the most ridiculous racket, and covering my room in a good few inches of sawdust, but i got the job done!

She now fits so snuggly, u couldn't squeeze a sheet of paper between the cab and the walls.

Cleaning my room took another 2hrs, hoover got blocked on a number of occasions, but the cab's lookin sweeeeeet so it's all good.

The lights are hung in such a way that they can be raised or lowered with extreme ease, the fans used to circulate the air in the flowering chamber will be hung the same way.

^^^^ Extractor + Light Hangers

^^^^ 2 Bar Heaters + Particle Filter + 5" Inline fan (air intake)

^^^^ Finished Veg cab minus the T5 Light

^^^^ Flowering cab pull out tray in/out

^^^^ Light raised to max

^^^^ Light at middle

^^^^ Light at lowest

^^^^ How lights are hung minus UVB (have to figure out how to hang it) - UVB will go in the middle

^^^^ random picture uploaded by mistake! (Veg cab T5 Up top)

It's coming together in a great fashion mate. Very nice built indeed. And seeing what you've accomplished in your last grow, I'm quite eager to see what you'll have in store for us this time in this cab :)
