Post in response to SWIMS log from chemroxx
- Ok, here's one to keep up to date on. I will for sure be tuning in to this thread when I'm online!
- My Water Buffalo, Spottie, is just a week or two behind you. He just ordered several different strains, I think Tazzies from 3 different sources (hoping to find a pre-2k cultivar, before they bred the
Morphine content down and the
Thebaine content up), Persian/Peshawar/China White (3 different cultivars of P. Som. Var. Album, hoping that different geographic source location of identical strains may cause worthwhile variations), a couple totally different Afghani strains from the Var. Albums, one that is NOT a hen and chick but is said to grow like a bush and produce 30 pods easy (a breeder strain for sure, especially if it's potent), a flavorful Arizona strain (it's a yellow P. Som! Just for kicks), and also a Turkish Somniferum, I think a VERY dark leaved variety, whose pods in a picture I found were just oozing latex in globs, and didn't even look scored!).
- Spottie is a plant breeder anyway, and makes hybrid varieties of all kinds of fun plants. People even buy his seeds at MMJ Co-ops, but believe it or not he is getting a little bored with pot (not THAT bored!) and wants to breed something new. Hopefully he will be able to use some of the black-market
drug cultivars, like the dark Turkish or one of the white varieties that still have high Morphine ratios to bring up the morphine potency on the Tazzies, which are filled with Latex but need a higher morphine percentage if they are post 2-k, which they likely are. He also hopes to find a way to work in the Afghani strain with all the pods, and if he could make it potent too, then he would have a super high yielding variety with lots of pds that yield tons of high quality latex. It will take him a few years, he is sure, but it is his next great challenge!
- Have you ever thought about doing any selective breeding? You could start by just trying to find the most potent or highest yielding ones and using JUST the fertilized seeds from those specific pods next season. Do that for a couple years and your strain will be visibly different and likely better than when it started. You should maybe think about a Tazzie x Persian/China hybrid too. F1 hybrids often have a good deal of "hybrid vigor" that will help you improve the quality of your plants to be better than anyone you know.
- At any rate, I'm gonna keep tuned in when I can. When Spottie's seeds get here, I might start a little grow log for him too if I have the time..... Spottie is tilling a whole garden that used to supply all the veggies his family grew for the whole year and repurposing the whole thing for his poppies. It's maybe a little bit bigger than half a tennis court. Plus he plans to see if any of the varieties will do well wild around here. Spottie is saying he's more exciting about breeding poppies than he was about breeding
marijuana!!!
- As you can see, Spottie likes to take care of his pain holistically, the pharmaceutical industrial complex is too powerful and has caused him problems in his life, so he will go the holistic, and he thinks moral way, and grow his own. He's already good at growing one kind of his own medicine, why not two?
- Bummer about the storm. It rains a bit here, and Spottie has grown a small test batch of poppies before. They got laid down by the rain a couple times when they were seedlings, but they recovered. As a matter of fact, the ones that stand back up the fastest will likely have stronger stems, which will in turn mean they can metabolize nutrients and sugars better, which will possibly help them be more desirable plants, or at least allow them to show you that they are superior. Good Luck, hope you don't get much more rain! Spottie is late getting started because of two freak SNOW storms, so I hope the weather gets better for this. Spottie has a perfect spot in full sunlight, as long as there aren't clouds in between.....
