I've been waiting for my last crop to finish so I could switch my grow to bare-bulb vertical set up, so since I harvested my Northern Light Blue and White Widow x Big Bud the other day, I thought I'd start a new journal starring the legendary, Mr. Nice Seeds Super Silver Haze. I wanna start off by saying thanks to a member of RIU that over the pass few months, has become a good friend. If it wasn't for Kevin Murphy, my grow would be over the day I harvested the last crop. The SSH I'm running now was a gift from him to me. He heard about my situation, and bought me the seeds from Shanti and had them delivered out of the kindness of his heart. Say what you want about him, Kevin Murphy's a good dude and a decent human being who just wants everyone to grow some bud and get along. Truly a cool dude, and real homie. Thanks Kev.

The genetics of this strain are some of the pillar strains of the cannabis world; 25% Northern Lights, 25% Skunk and 50% Haze, and I've been dying to grow it since the first time I smoked it 10 years ago. This strain fits me and my personality like a glove. It won the Cannabis Cup three years in a row in 1997, 1998 and 1999. It was bred by Nevil who at the time, was working for GHSco. It was made by selecting a mother from over a thousand Northern Lights#5 x HazeC plants to pollinate with a very special Skunk x HazeC. For those who don't know, the Haze C male is one of two original Haze males that 99.9% of haze plants are based on today. When he finally settled on his favorite nl5xhaze, he hit it with skunkxhaze pollen and Super Silver Haze was born.

When I moved the grow from the closet to the spare bathroom, I left the lights horizontal because the plants were trained in chicken wire and for the most part, had a level canopy. My philosophy on growing has changed a lot in the past few months in that, I want to make things as efficient as possible while at the same time keeping things as basic as possible. I guess that the philosophy of most growers but you know.....whatever. lol. So I decided to change to a bare-bulb, vertical set up. After doing some reading on different grow rooms and Ops; amateur grow science and botany and such; I realize that I don't want to use air cooled hoods, or grow horizontally anymore. Vertical seems like the way to go to get the most out of your plants and equipment. As for the hoods, the glass blocks UV which impedes trichome growth for one. The glass also blocks about 5%-15% of the lumen output. And when you're already using a 400w, you need all the lumens you can get. And with a good a/c you can offset the heat easily.
With the a/c going and a fan on the bulb, the room stays at a good 80 degrees F. I'm starting to wonder why I ever used air-cooled hoods to begin with. That's like $150 I could've spent on anything else... Oh well. Here's the setup before and after.

When I started I had 20 reg SSH's. 3 didn't germ, 5 were lost to mice, and 7 to a fucking dog. Now I have 5 left and so far, one for sure is a female. I'm 51% sure that another one is a female, and a third one has yet to show sex but it looks like it could be a female. 2 for sure are males. All of them look really pretty. They have a great structure and sturdy tough little stems. Quality genetics, you can bet on that. Shanti is a genius. Here they are.

Yup. That's it for now. pretty boring I know, but it's early. For those who don't know, my light is a 400w HPS, the soil is MG Organic Choice, the containers are 2.76 L nursery pots and the nutes are House and Garden for now. I'm thinking of going partially organic for this grow meaning I'll be switching to earthworm casting/compost/guano teas soon. From what I can tell from after their first feeding is that it looks like they prefer a rich soil to chemical feeding. Today is day 45 from germination, and since they started showing sex today, the first day of flower. Even though I don't like to, they've been in 12/12 from seed. I like to wait until the plants are sexually mature but oh well I guess. I hope that at least two of them are females. I can work with two. I'm gonna grow these out normal, maybe take some clones when they get big enough, and start my mother search next time when I can get a bag of seeds again. Either that or make my own seeds.
Till next time, happy growing everyone.

Haha! Thanks Man! Growing is so much fun for me. I love it.
I couldn't have gone bare-bulb if I were still growing in the closet. The main reason I can grow this way now is because the central a/c blows into the bathroom. You could do it too by offsetting the BTUs of your lights with the right sized a/c. Generally you want 4500BTU a/c for every 1000w light, depending on how well the room is insulated. That, the fan blowing on the bulb, along with the blower sucking hot air out of the room do a pretty good job of keeping the room in the perfect temperature. 80F in the morning and evening, 85F during the hottest hours of the day. 40%-50% RH with the new humidifier, so it's nice. It's probably the most comfortable room in my house lol.
That being said, 85F is still a little too high for me. So I'm gonna be growing, feeding and training the plant in a way that will help it thrive in higher temperatures. For one, adding CO2 goes a long way for helping the stomata exchange gas and deal with heat, but I'm also gonna be fertilizing and foliar feeding the plants with bennie bacteria and fungi and potassium silicate to help make them physically stronger and resistant to mold and bugs. It will also make them very hardy and vigorous in heat. I'm also simply going to change the time the light runs to the coolest hours of the day rather than the hottest. Something like 9pm to 9am or something. I'll do it by turning the light off an hour early everyday for the next 7 days.
Honestly tho, I don't have to do anything, but I want this garden to be 10x better than the last one so I don't want to cut corners.

thinking about doing this next, scribbd
Cool. This is my first time running bare vert so you can learn from my mistakes.

First thread I'm going to sub to, that is if you will tell me how!
At the top of the thread page, in the blue bar, there's a tag that says 'thread tools'. The third one down is 'subscribe to thread'.
You can have it notify your email, or just pop up in 'My Rollitup'.
Thanks man.

lookin great beans, think im going to sub up on this vert grow. pulling up a chair
I see that you're also a fan of FMA am I right?
I'm not nearly as involved in the anime world as I used to be, is brotherhood a new series that's still being written week by week, or is it already finished? Cause waiting a week to find out what happens is killing me!
And Scandal's Shunkan Sentimental is my new favorite j-pop song, but I love the closing theme of season one too

Like the first time you smoked hash ur mind will be blown by the first few hits of NetFlix.
Ya i think we need a NEtflix must watch thread in this bitch......
My friends tell me to cancel my HBO and premium channel subscriptions cause everything that's on HBO is eventually on Netflix. Is that true? Would you take netflix or all the premium channels (HBO, Cinemax, Stars, Showtime, Encore etc..)?

NetFlix by far man. Cheaper and WAY more movies doc, series etc..... plus INternational movies anime.... like no shit it has everything. Not EVERYTHING but it has more than enough to keep you 100% entertained for a few months @ 8 bucks a months that's
great.
