first ever closet grow

I’m new to this forum but I’ve been reading lots of posts and thought it was about time to start my own grow journal. This is my very first ever grow, I’ve thought long and hard about how I want to go about growing and finally decided on the following setup.

  • · 1 x 250 watt (HPS) Lighting system
  • · 1 x Gro Tank 205 NFT System (27.5 x 15.25 x 7.25")
  • Home made ventilation system
  • Seeds – ICE
  • Room temp 75 – 85F
  • Humidity 56%

I’ve attached some pics of the grow room when seedlings were 4 days old. This is my first time so please let me know what you think. I want to give them the best possible environment.

Tomorrow will be the 7th day and 6 of them are looking ok, I think. I’ll post the latest pics tomorrow.

The roots are going to be wanting to grow out of those jiffy pellets about now, might want to think about putting them in some beer pong cups or something so you don't lose any momentum.

you will want to lower that light down sometime soon

Cheers guys just what i needed to know .

How high do you think i should put the light above the propegator?

Do you think i could transplant into 3" rockwool cubes?

I have my light between 6-9 inches above my vegetating plants. However, I am using a 150W HPS not a 250 like yours, also I have a boxfan on my plants 24/7 to keep them from getting to hot and wilting

EDIT: If your light is still like it is in this picture .... first-ever-closet-grow-102_1148.jpg
then you will DEFFIENTLY want to move it closer NOW before the plants start stretching towards it. You want short bushy plants and not tall slender plants... tall is bad... short is good :D

i moved my light down lastnight but i think i'll move it down again to 15" above the plants, and see how it goes.

i've just ordered a new cage fan too, i'm going to be using that to try get the temps down.

thanks for all the advice. keep it comingkiss-ass

I would suggest not putting your light that close to the plants. The reason being is if the light puts out to much heat into that dome then it will cook and kill your plants. However, if you have extremely good ventilation and your temps DO NOT EXCEED 80F (tops) in that dome then it will be perfectly fine to do so. But watch out because the water will warm up very fast. I had a cup of water get nearly 110F under a incandescent bulb for my first grow while I was germinating some seeds (they died). I assume the same can happen with a 250W HPS setup. I personally like to keep my plants as close as possible and as a consequence I caused my plant to get "Light Bleaching" ..... check out my grow and towards the end you will see what can happen if the light is to close to your setup

It seems ok, it's really cold here right now. i'm monitoring the temps really close, they seem to be around 73 - 88 F. The plants are loving it i'll post some more pics tomorrow:-P. I think i'm on track for transplanting in to rockwool cubes on friday.

oh has anyone had an experience with using an NFT system?

keep smoking those tulips :bigjoint:

hey guys,

we're on the 11 day now all the kids are still looking health but i'm slightly concerned about the stockyness of them. IS that normal?

let me know what you think.

I would drop it down to about 9 inches away from the tip tops of the tallest plant. But make sure they do not dry out or they will die. Check the bottom of those plants and see if the roots are growing out of your medium yet. If so, then you can go ahead and transplant now.

Hey guys got the seedling all planted up in my NFT setup.

Man, it was a bit of struggle for me to get all the system setup. lots of issues with ph and nut leavels, but after some trial and error i managed to get the PH right and i was too scared to start half nutes so decided on 25% nutes.

i'm not sure if this was a good idea or not, time will tell i suppose :?

oh greenearth i moved the light 15 inch above the plants, the temps got a little high.

anyway here's the latest pics. let me know what you think guys

yeah i've seen that. he's really funny and proves that weed is the best thing in the world

oh just a quick update i transplanted the plants on friday. I was really worried that i'd messed up something because they all started to look a bit iffy, some of the leaves dryed out.

Checked on them tonight and they look amazing. i'm not sure what happened.

i'll post pics tomorrow.

peace:leaf:

i hear that transplanting will cause your plant to stall for a few days... prob just a normal case of adjusting to the new environment

good job....
i gt a very similar setup....
250w HPS... 12-16" from plant tops.... 10" fan.... 8-23w cfl's
heat's under control at the moment but as summer approaches ill have 2 hook up more fan's
