If people got their cats fixed, there wouldn't be an overpopulation problem and they wouldn't be considered an invasive species. I keep my horse at a huge barn with a mouse/rat/snake problem and the barn cats have done a good job of controlling those populations. The snakes would be a good thing if they weren't EVERYWHERE. Feral cat populations start with irresponsible owners, hence the word "feral"... they wouldn't be destroying ecosystems if it wasn't for us. Going along with that, from a biological standpoint, cats are not supposed to be kept inside. I have only had indoor cats but understand why people think it's cruel to keep them indoors. I had one cat that literally lived it's entire life planning to escape every time the door was opened... pretty sad life if you ask me.

I always encourage cat owners to put a bell on their cat's collar. A new cat in the neighborhood will cause a noticeable drop in the bird population. I don't think people realize that their cat will kill something nearly every day its outside. Those animals die a slow, painful death for no purpose at all. The cat seldom, if ever, even eats them. Hunting is instinctive, but a well-fed cat has no compulsion to eat its prey. This is not a part of the natural "circle of life".
