Try it. I would recommend cutting them into cubes. That way more air to surface. Sponges hold alot of water so might stay to wet to long. But without doing it myself I'm guessing here

I'm pretty sure the "Aerogarden" uses small sponges for starting seeds, not sure what they're made of tho.
