how to keeping rez cool

What way can i keep my res cooler? The room temp is around 80 so a few days after changing the res the water is room temp which seem too warm and inviting root rot.

I've thought of frozen water bottles but id like something more systematic.

I am in that same boat with you, near the end of flowering is when you get the head aches.

If you have a huge grow you may want to look in to purchasing a water chiller, Polar Bear chillers are used by many of the top growers here on RIU.

My rez is usually in between 18-21C with Hygrozyme & my plants are doing very well although I do have cool packs as backup. Do you happen to know what the ideal rez temps should be?

18-27c or 68-80f is ideal from what i've read.

anything above 70 invites pathogens

im doing an indoor grow, inside a cabinet and i had the same prob, but here was my solution..

Put the air pump outside the cab, and keep a fan blowing on it at all times. Also its pretty shitty but i keep my room temp below 70 just to be on the safe side.

other than that, fans fans fans! a fan right below the lights should direct most of the heat given off directly away from the res and top of the plant. Also another fan near the base, to direct the heat UP towards the exhaust fan at the top.

Ive tried all these.... i ended up buying way too many fans now lol

If you can't do that, then insulate the res and all plumbing. All reservoirs should be white, paint them if necessary.

If you are using a water pump, run it on a timer.

Using a fan will cool it, but will also increase evaporation which will effect your tds and ph.

You can also freeze bottles of salt water and drop them into the res.

If your res's require different nute loads, I can help you build a multi res chiller using a chest freezer. Just let me know.

Use chemical nutes and you won't have to worry about temps too much...... unless it get's stupid in there, but low 80's = no problem with chems.

Imput a water bottle between two of my reservoirs and they chilled quick.

with a fan going across the res and the bottle i should be straight.

I haven't built a multi-res chiller. The idea is from a similar project that could easily be adapted. The original was a chest freezer adapted as a single res chiller.

I'll give a quick run down and if somebody actually wants to go build one, I'll help you through it:

The chest freezer is partially filled with glycol (non-toxic marine antifreeze), or a large container filled with glycol is placed in the freezer.

Stainless steel tubing is ran through the wall and sealed. This is coiled into a heat exchanger and submerged in the glycol. For a multi-res, you would use multiple coils.

Each res would have it's own pump and coil and an ETC (electronic temperature controller), which can read the temp in each res and turn on/off the pump as necessary for cooling. The freezer (chiller) would run constantly.

If you only have a couple small reservoirs, it may be more economical to just go buy a couple chillers, but small chillers won't handle big res's under HID lighting in tight boxes. A small freezer should hold up to about anything you can throw at it...

Not yet. I may get one setup soon. We finally got a female mother from our durban poison seeds. we've sprouted 7/8 males but we got our mother now so were cool.
