Empathy comes from our connection to our bodies, our feelings are felt first in our body and become complex socially driven emotions in the brain. Think of a cat, we evolved from a common ancestor, they express their emotions through their body and the hair still stands up on the back of our necks. We call them pets, because we communicate by touch with them, we communicated with our mother by touch as infants, it is a primal sense. Attachment issues with the mother cause deep psychological and emotional issues later in life, children need love and caring, they need to be held and hugged too.
