Weedkiller glyphosate 'doesn't cause cancer' - Baye

Pharmaceutical group Bayer has dismissed claims that an ingredient
used in weed killers is carcinogenic.

The German company, which owns agriculture giant Monsanto, says herbicides containing glyphosate are safe.

On Friday, Monsanto was ordered to pay $289m (£226m) damages to a man who claimed

the products caused his cancer.

A Californian jury said Monsanto should have warned

users about the dangers of its Roundup and RangerPro weedkillers.

Bayer completed its $66bn takeover of Monsanto in June.

A Bayer spokesperson told the BBC the two companies operate independently.

In a statement the company said: "Bayer is confident, based on the strength of the science,

the conclusions of regulators around the world and decades of experience,

that glyphosate is safe for use and does not cause cancer when used according to the label."

The landmark lawsuit was the first to go to trial alleging a glyphosate link to cancer.

The claimant, groundsman Dewayne Johnson, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2014.

His lawyers said he regularly used a form of RangerPro while working at a school in Benicia, California.

He is among more than 5,000 similar plaintiffs across the US.

Glyphosate is the world's most common weedkiller.

The California ruling could lead to hundreds of other claims against Monsanto.

The company said it intends to appeal against the verdict.

What is glyphosate and is it dangerous?
Glyphosate was introduced by Monsanto in 1974, but its patent expired in 2000,

and now the chemical is sold by various manufacturers. In the US, more than 750 products contain it.

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer,

the World Health Organisation's cancer agency, concluded that

glyphosate was "probably carcinogenic to humans".

However, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) insists it is safe when used carefully.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) also says glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer in humans.

Last November 2017 EU countries voted to renew the licence of glyphosatedespite campaigns against it.

BBC North American correspondent James Cook reported that in California - where a judge

recently ruled that coffee must carry a cancer warning -

the agriculture industry sued to prevent such a label for glyphosate,

even though the state lists it as a chemical known to cause cancer.

What happened in the groundsman case?
Jurors found on Friday that Monsanto had acted with "malice" and that its weed killers contributed

"substantially" to Mr Johnson's terminal illness.

Following an eight-week trial, the jury ordered the company to pay $250m in punitive damages

together with other costs that brought the total figure to almost $290m.

Mr Johnson's lawyer, Brent Wisner, said the jury's verdict showed that the evidence

against the product was "overwhelming".

"When you are right, it is really easy to win," he said.

Dewayne Johnson reacting to the verdict in a San Francisco court
How did Monsanto react?

"The jury got it wrong," vice-president Scott Partridge said outside the courthouse in San Francisco.

In a written statement, the company said it was "sympathetic to Mr Johnson and his family"

but it would "continue to vigorously defend this product, which has a 40-year history of safe use".

"Today's decision does not change the fact that more than 800 scientific studies and reviews -

and conclusions by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US National Institutes of Health and

regulatory authorities around the world - support the fact that glyphosate does not cause cancer,

and did not cause Mr Johnson's cancer," it added.

Back in my golf course days, the head groundskeeper was a dope, in the worse sense of the word. He did the spraying with no protection at all. That was many moons ago. Don't know how his health is today.

Glyphosphate is fuxed up. Whining? Yeah nobody should whine about lymphoma or HPS LED's... Why we're at it lets wear an asbestos lined suit while putting on a few coats of lead paint.

Run a water report from your municipal source , then cry .
REGARDLESS whether you use Roundup or not .... people do . It gets into various water sources from people doing simple things like WASHING DOWN THEIR DRIVEWAYS, GARDENING PLOTS , soil runoff , etc.

I inspect homes that have evidence of CHLORDANE , LINDANE , DURSBAN TC , CREASOTE , MALATHION, ETC. so MON “ SATAN “ is just a very small part of the puzzle. DIAZONON was pulled sometime back ( heard a story that the state found BAG DUMPING into dumpsters ). Hell , I even come across LYE .... once used to “ cover “ sewage smell under a leaky house ..... you think I suited up just to crawl over that ? ........ fuck no. When chlordane was used .... the fucking sub area soil looked frosty and sparkly ..... another fuck no moment. I consistently would find OLD dangerous pesticides and chem in peoples sheds , garages and lofts. Once found and old ant killer bottle ( green bottle with one flat side ) and a cap on it with center hole .... active chem : arsenic syrup.

There is MUCH MORE shit collecting in the full water analysis than any weed killer.
There are elements that can never be filtered out.

Over 40 years of use and research. And in that time not one single study has directly or indirectly connected glyphosate and cancer. California courts are as off the rails as Nancy Pelosi. San Francisco is being compared to third world countries. Yet they think they are an example to the world of how things should be done. The state is doomed under the current leadership.

The report pretty much damns America over its problem with roundup.

I know, right? I saw a news story just the other night on PBS. It was about whether the UK will be able to produce enough food for itself once it pulls out of the EU. Yet Brits seem to be more concerned about bashing America rather than addressing their own issues.

The quote "Men are blind in their own cause" is unfortunately so fitting in today's world.

We dont care, we approve roundup and have had no such cancer link case or scare :-)

We own vast tracts of land in other countries for future food shortages, the question was more to do with available seasonal foods us Brits like all year round. Obviously brexit is a load of hype, truly we dont really care or notice.

So you are British, cool. It's good to know there are also those among you that dont fall for the hype and scare tactics globists exist on.
And I didn't listen too closely to the entire piece. The headline caught my attention at first. After that I only caught bits and pieces as background noise.

Brexit at the moment is just rich and fat cats saying fake news to get the public to back whatever side they are on.

Really nothing will happen of much intrest, its a minor trade agreement we loose but on the other hand we get to kick imigrants out win win for us all :-)

No worries. And it's not Americans that are against Roundup. Unfortunately though it's the stronghold pockets of liberal lunacy we all get judged on. I am a third generation farmer and proud to be an American.

I used to fish a small stream back in the fifties. We were subsistence farmers and hunted and fished for our food as well as butchered every fall. Very remote Appalachian area. I had 30 in my graduating class. After the fertilizer runnoff and herbicides it's a mess. I took my grandkids back a few years ago I couldn't believe it. Growths on the few fish we saw. No white bass and no small mouth. A few pumpkin seed and sunfish. I grew up in the area. Beans and corn.
