I was at the local nursery today and got a nice tip from the old gentleman helping me.
My soil is very hard clay so even though I prep a hole the roots very seldom grow beyond.
Here are the two tips.
1. mix a bit of the bad soil in with the good to help condition the roots for it.
Ill admit Im just going to take his word for this one.
Second tip I feel is simple but once he told me I love it.
Most of us dig and shape our hole leaving smooth walls.
Then the roots find that smooth surface and much like being in a pot they swirl around the smooth surface.
Tip 2
Once you have the hole shaped
Take a couple shovel stabs at various angles into the walls so the roots will have something to penetrate.
Your welcome.
