Planting tip

I was at the local nursery today and got a nice tip from the old gentleman helping me.

My soil is very hard clay so even though I prep a hole the roots very seldom grow beyond.

Here are the two tips.

1. mix a bit of the bad soil in with the good to help condition the roots for it.

Ill admit Im just going to take his word for this one.

Second tip I feel is simple but once he told me I love it.

Most of us dig and shape our hole leaving smooth walls.

Then the roots find that smooth surface and much like being in a pot they swirl around the smooth surface.

Tip 2
Once you have the hole shaped
Take a couple shovel stabs at various angles into the walls so the roots will have something to penetrate.

Your welcome.

I live in the sandhills. I have trouble with the sides of my holes caving in. The roots will be able to escape. But worse, roots from every weed, briar, bush and tree in the neighborhood will find their way to my soil mix to still my ferts and water.

From someone who grew in hard red clay...
Here is some advice.....DONT!
Fact of the matter is when you make a hole in clay and fill it with good soil ...and then it rains, that clay acts as a bowl. It will turn your new soil literally into soup.
I do recommend adding clay to your new soil for all the benefits clay has but not to grow in it.
Last grow I had 200 gallon holes and after a good rain storm there was water standing in it. If I didn't figure out a way to remove the water I would have lost everything.
Most people here can't even have septic because of the clay.
Go above ground unless you get little to no annual rainfall.
Trust me....

For sure on my property I grow in bags for weed,

When we bought the property we had to put in a drain field, our perc test were horrible.

But, we are planting shrubs n shit right now so i have to deal with it.

Man, 200 gallon holes full of soup sounds like a true nightmare.
