DIY Quantum Boards Vs CXB3590

Hey All,

I'm new to the forum, and new to the DIY LED Scene. My apologies if this is out of place. I started out looking at building a cob setup, and have started leaning towards QB's. I have no first hand experience with either one. The space I'm flowering in is 2.5' Deep x 6' Wide x 7' tall (minus an inch or two).

Firstly, what are your thoughts on QB's vs. CXB3590's?

For my space i was looking at the following passive cree setup (excluding holders/ rails / hangers) .

4 Cree CXB 3590's (2700k 80 CRI) driven by Mean Well HLG-240H-C1400B

6 Cree CXB 3590's (3500k 80 CRI) driven by Mean Well HLG-240H-C1050B

on 10 black anodized 140mm pin heatsinks

As for QB's, I'm struggling with coverage and power. I'm wondering how many QB's I should run for best results?

Thanks in advance for your input /assistance.

I hear that QB's are still top of the line, but CXB 3590's have been outdone by other, newer cobs.
They are the most famous and were about the best when they came out, but their output per watt drops off at higher powers, by about 20% compared to other top of the line cobs.
You don't need to be getting lots of cobs and dimming them way way down anymore, 3590-style. (Or so I've heard)

4 CXB3590's will fit on an HLG-240H-C1750B. Fyi

Thanks for the response. When you say other newer cobs, are you talking vero, Bridgelux?

@SCJedi thanks for your input, I ordered 4 QB288's V2 3000k with slate 2 heatsinks this afternoon for this flower space. I'm still not 100% on what driver I should be using. I was looking at wiring the 4 in series, and using a dimmable driver. HLG-240H-C1050B, or HLG-320H-C1400B, is where my head is at based on HLG's QB288 Board guide. The board guide covers version 1 though, so I'm unsure.

I havent looked at the specs yet so i cannot say 100%. You can also post in the DIY Quantam Boards thread i linked above. Someone there can probably answer you faster than I can.

So I ended up going with a mix. 4 QB 288’s v2, driven by two hlg-240h-2100b’s, and 4 amber citizens. The driver recommended to me for the citizens wont even turn them on.

A friend of a friend recommended i run them with hlg-120h-36a. I shouldve done my own math on that... they wont even turn on.

Im really happy with the outcome of my QB / cob build, I feel inclined to put up a few pictures of the light in action.

About 15sq ft. of space. The 4 cobs ( citizen ambers) are being driven at 50%, and the QB 288’s at 75-80%

I don’t have any output readings, but the ladies don’t seem to be worried about it.

These are Purple Trainwreck day 39.
