Anyone?? Why should I run my COB @ higher wattage if I can get it closer to plant and run it on lower wattage?
Generally it would be cost because buying 2 cobs and running them at 50% or so is cheaper than buying 10.
But since you already have them do whatever. Unless you grow tiny plants 100 watts is only enough for 2 plants. Or 1 bigger one.
You clearly have your mind made up so why are you even asking? Just go do it and see how it turns out

I saw this in another thread and thought it was interesting for the amount of power consumption. Off the shelf LED bulbs. I'm looking for a cheap alternative grow light because one of my lights burnt out in my veg tent and I don't have the cash to get a COB build going yet. After reading the thread I wondered how much more penetration would you get if you added a lens. Flying Carpet build, as modular as i ccould get, as naked as I could get almost no fasteners, while still being totally rigid, electrically safe, upgradable, spreadable, or compressable flexible in shape light and spectrum configuration and fast swap plug and play maintenance. Upgradable to full electronic drivability and dimmability, like with an app and sunrise sundown etc...
14 Cree CXB 3590, round the edges 90cri 3500K around the middle part a cross with six cobs 4x 4000K 1x 3500K and one 5000K 90cri.

6x 3 channel pcb strips (salvaged from chinese bulky 120cm led bars, which I litterally cut in half) with oslon ssl80.
Red 2:1 660-630nm Blue 450nm and far red.
10x UVA led (same led as on chilled boards)

6 dimmable meanwell drivers as much filled out/efficient as possible
One for red
one for blue and UV
one for far red

One for 6 veg cobs in a cross
one for 8 90cri cobs
and last but not least one for 2x red meat cob

All leds run at max 0.7A but the red meat cobs can go up to 1.4A :P

max total wall watts about 700W and about 660W total output.

5 dimmers, 5 timers

All connections are with neat JSL style cannot go wrong connectors just like with chilled. Its a combined parallel series wiring.

In terms of efficiency it should be almost as good as as chilled or maybe just as good because of the heatsink overkill, sheer amount of diodes, spread and low amps.

I started off with old drivers and old ideas but ended up slimmed down and ON PAR ;)

Damn, I felt like I'd done something when I built mine! But you've stepped it up. Nice job.... With all the dimmers it should be fun to experiment with

When I was watching growmaus' first videos I already had my own ideas and he never really did what I wanted untill recently with Chilled...which was screw around with multi channel pcbs for efficient monos and combine that with efficient whites.
I still like cobs because they are just the most steampunk you can get, just take more lol, and are among the most versatile, Im not done yet with this matter, hold your cobs lol

For my first grow I went with Cobs not in the last place because of the advise of Growmau5, while I was actually walking around with more like a cathedral like ledscreen ideas with thousands of smaller leds...

But cobs where caclulated pre fab, so I went with 6 for my first grow. Later I found out 90cri is way more beneficial despite the efficiency dip, and then that extra monos where the way.
But not one designer came up with the idea of just putting them together on a simple multi channel pcb except for Vitali from Chilled. Excellent product! But why isn't there a product exactly like that but without the whites? for all of us who already have invested in 80 cri cobs???

I went on alibaba searching and this is what I found, not what I was looking for but I found this to be one interesting product, MOQ100 I contacted the supplier: price per piece 70,- euro:

I prefer the strips over the cobs, but that doesn‘t matter here. What I like is, that you highly customized YOUR space. Actually I reall don‘t like the designs of boards with multiple channels, atleast the once I found. Also in your link, all the colours are added in the middle, which I can‘t understand at all. I want to have them spreaded over the whole canopy, and your flying carpet is a really good example of it. Atm I am collecting all the infos I need, to improve the cri80 strips. So your example gave me a few nice hints!

I totally agree with you, there is still much room for improvement. It's like the implementation of led technology in this field has only just got off its ass.

from what i have seen..here..since i do not have any added mono's

once anyone gets a decent white cob/pcb.... that things work well
and

imho the most important part after this is grower skill/environment

We may be entering an area of mgrow lights becoming an art form. Advanced LED arrays have put some space between themselves and other light sources. Top end discreet diodes are interesting tweaks but if you’re growing with COBs or COB based lights or Boards you are OK! More time to focus on plants and other things when they are so efficient and easy to live with.
