Need advise in setting up a grow tent

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to grow 4 plants in a grow tent "Grow Lab GL80" (size is 2'7" x 2'7"x 5'11"). I have 3 questions for you, colleagues:
What pot size should I use to grow 4 plants (2 sativas and 2 hybrids) in the aforesaid grow tent?
Should I use 400w or 600w HPS bulb to fully cover my plants with light? I'm planning to use air cooled reflector to keep it cool.
How much Air Flow Capacity (CFM) should my Inline Fan have to decently operate with a carbon filter and air cooled reflector?
Looking forward to hear from you, guys

Thank you!

Dear colleagues,

What would be a better way to position two 3 gallon pots in a grow tent "Grow Lab GL80" (size is 2'7" x 2'7"x 5'11"). I drew 2 options with dimensions below (in centimeters).

You will be fine with 4 plants. You could run 240 watts of COB led and not really have to worry about heat. 1218C940-16F1-4954-A7D5-CCC580F89061.jpegThe 2 in the back are in 2 gal pots, front are in 1 gal. 1 gal is too small for these, this was an experiment to see how small i could go without losing yield. I dont think ill be too far off from last run in 2 gal pots with this strain but its cutting it pretty close on water wile these are bulking up. All bodhi seeds gear, appalachian superskunk in the front, more cowbell in the rear. I got 2oz each off of the mc last run and 3 from the ass. This run is looking much better as long as the ass continue to bulk up like they should. Time will tell. This is day 42. There are alot of ways to grow, you just have to figure out what will work for you and what you have to work with. I should be able to hit 1.5g a watt pretty easily, 12oz a tent. I run 2 of these. Im using a 390cfm 6” fan teed to each tent with a carbon filter for exhaust and a 6” 190cfm low noise intake fan with a hepa filter. Both run constantly with an 11” circulator fan in each. I would like 1 more fan in each, will do eventually. Oh yeah, the bud is pretty good too...D6AEFD94-3767-4323-A953-34CA7116D7BC.jpegA0BCBA28-DF3E-4060-938A-0E652B8440AD.jpeg check out my grow journal for more info

Oh yeah, as far as running plants that are different heights, pretty simple solution. FC0444C1-7959-4223-8844-A8EED1190FCA.jpegMaybe prop up the shorter ones? I dunno. With a little care and technique, you should be able to pump that lil tent chock full of dank nugs. I do however, strongly advise against hps light. A 315 watt cmh would be good as long as you dont get your plants too tall. The uvb they put out can be a little much for some strains. You should really be between 24-30” between the bulb and canopy. I got a diy kit from rapid led for $220. Very nice little kit and the best bang for your buck for cob leds. Pretty simple to assemble, for a few more bucks you can get solderless chips. Comes with everything you need aside from tools. Even a pretty cool little hanging kit. CFD90308-3FCF-40FF-B0F9-DA90597599F9.jpegThe light acrossed the top is a setup i built for my veg closet using household led bulbs. Works great, hard to beat for a $60 light that covers a 2’x3.5’ using about 100 watts. Could be more efficient but, work with what you got. But yeah, the other 2 pics are the rapid led 3 chip vero 29 kit fully assembled. Draws 260 watts at the wall, 240 of actual output (20w +/- to run the driver) will do everything a 400w hps can do but better. 00CCD2C1-66D4-492D-BD3B-0F348E131866.jpegThis paticular cut of more cowbell dosnt turn purple like this under hps. I also have to mention, im a little jealous of your tent! Mine is only 2’6”x2’6”x5’0”. I could really use the extra head room sometimes! Little tents like these can be tricky. Bruce Lee said it best though, “be like water”.

Wow, thank you very much for the detailed reply! I can see that you've got the growing experience.

I'd like to use LED lights but it costs a lot for me. I'm about to get 400w HPS lights with 500 m3/h fan. I'll use a speed controller to run its speed down a little bit.

So, you think that 2'7" x 2'7"x 5'11" tent would fit 4 plants using SCROG method? If so, should I use 2 gallon pots?

I use a 2.5x2.5 tent and grow 3 plants. Growing in an ebb and flow system.
I use a 4 inch fan for air handling, plus a few smaller fans for air movement. Using LED lighting allows me to not need to cool the tent as much as with HPS, so cooling is not a big issue.

The light will pay for itself in one harvest. How much are you paying for the hps?

I'm growing for myself only so it's probably not going to pay for itself xD The whole growing project is going to pay for itself in the way of delivering pleasure :)

Approximately, whole HPS/MH setup will cost me US $350

It probably WILL pay(in actual money), at least save from paying.

A bag of dank, even here in Colorado is the cost of your $350. You will grow MUCH more than a single bag in a 2.5 foot tent.

The led light i suggested costs $220. No need to change bulbs and consumes 160 less watts.

Heres a couple links:
https://www.rapidled.com/vero29-triple-cob-array-kit/
Go with the 2100ma driver, The A is the easiest, B if you want remote dimming. 3000 or 3500 poke in unless youre confident in soldering
https://www.amazon.com/Anjeet-Spectrum-COB-System-Replace/dp/B01DDC052E
The other option would be getting this light and swapping the chips out with vero 18s. Ill see if i can find a link for those. I dont know if they come in poke in but ill check. This setup would give you better coverege having 6 smaller chips instead of 3.

Hello again,

I've decided to go with LED lights instead of HPS/MH.

Is there a wattage limit for a certain grow space with LED lights like it is with HPS/MH lights? I mean, can I go with 1200W LED light for my 3'x3'x6' grow tent? What are drawbacks? I'm asking because if I decide to get a 4'x4' grow tent in the future I'll have a light prepared already.

Thank you!

Be aware there are a couple of different ways of "measuring" led light.
One way is what it draws from the wall. 1200 watts of led is a BIG($$$) light. I run 320 in my 3x3 tent.
The other way is "equivalent" light. The light is like a 1200 watt HPS kind of thing.
You want to talk here about what it pulls from the wall.

The rule of thumb is about 35 to 50 watts per square foot. Measured by what it pulls from the wall.

What he said. Chances are, if the light is listed with an equivalent to number, its not a good light. I run 240 watts in a 2.5x2.5
