My input would be to confront him alone, that way he dosent have to put on airs or whip out his misplaced bravado. Be sure to do this in an area with a camera, possibly outside loading dock or something to that effect. Just calmly ask if you did anything or if he's solely motivated off of a prior experience with someone of your race. If you can't diplomatically solve it then we'll... Snitch?

I suggest getting proof of said incidents before going to HR. Like concrete solid proof. Not having proof will just be them looking into it before anything goes down. It kinda depends on the company though. I've worked at places where just the accusation of something like that usually ended up in employment termination of the accused if it were actually taken to HR with an official report filed.
If you slap evidence out on the table chances are the guy will be canned within the hour.
Always have your phone at the ready when you're going to be around him. There's a few apps out there that blacks out the screen so it looks like it's off while it's recording if you can't just do that via settings.
Just be ready to keep your eyes and ear open for any BS that might go on if he's close to any other coworkers.
Circles of retaliation can be screwy sometimes.
Any dirt other people might have on you can come back to bite you in the butt.

Hey OP I am half Chinese and have faced racism many times. I always report the offender and if nothing is done about it, quit the job or move away from the apartment. Have you seen The Revenant? "Revenge is in the hands of the creator"

If you involve HR/ law enforcement, you tie your hands of other options, ones I would want to utilize.

The minute he physically assaulted me, like walking into me in an open hallway, it woulda been on.

I had a guy keep taking muffins I was bringing in for break, he thought it was a joke because he was twice my size and didn't think I'd do anything. I followed him in the bathroom with a 3lb hand sledge, kicked open the stall door while he was shitting, pulled him of the toilet with his pants around his ankles and ass all shitty, stood on his arm and told him in no uncertain terms if he touched my shit again, I'd turn his hand into hamburger. No-one fucked with me after that.

Worst advice on this thread so far. You are actually celebrating and advocating a violent solution to a minor nuisance. We need a new thread called "Assault and Battery in the Workplace what can you do?"

Yeah, cause it works, immediately. No bureaucratic BS, no warnings before formal actions, no slap on the wrist. I'd put money on the fact that guy I threatened thought long and hard about stealing someone else shit again. I don't see a racist, asshole as a "minor nuisance" , especially when there's been physical assaults and reckless driving with no regard to his life, just because of his race. That's an immediate danger.

OK let's imagine I was the one whom you brutalized in the toilet. For snaking muffins. What revenge do you consider suitable for me to perform upon you? Young feuds like that are to be capped with extreme prejudice, and with your arrogation of the right to physical violence removing every barrier of decency or restraint, I would be creative in my choice of slow, awful poison. And, in a perversion of your own reasoning, it would not be murder but pest control.

You propose a violent response to a nonviolent irritant. I contend that that is the road to feud and all the deadly injustice that a feud entails. I emphatically disagree with you in this instance. The response must be proportional to the misdeed. Otherwise civilization is a colossal put-on.

Hey all,

I'm a asian working in a majority white workplace. there is one other asian and one black guy and the rest are all white, a staff of about 20 or so. For the most part everyone is pretty cool, but there is this one dude...

We'll call him DB. My first week DB let it be known that he was a racist and didn't care for asians with comments like "yeah i'm a racist and proud of it" and "where's that stray cat that used to hang around here? did you eat it?" other gems such as "all christians are white" and "you're more american than the other asian guy" (because I don't have a asian accent).

I didn't really let him get to me b/c it's just words and he is literally a mouth-breathing idiot. I got on pretty good by just ignoring him for the past year.

Well today, during break he almost hit me with his car while he was backing out and I was walking behind his car. He has a tendency to just gun it in reverse without looking, some sort of "being a badass" thing he does. He had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting me. He was visibly agitated by this.

At the end of the day I was walking back from the time clock, DB was walking towards the timeclock, the path had more than enough room for two people abreast. he goes out of his way to walk into my shoulder with his forcibly shoving me backwards. I ignored him and left for the day. It took everything I had not to turn around and destroy him physically.

What can I do about this? What do you guys suggest? and does anyone have personal experience with when coworker conflicts turn physical?

He's a guy in his 50s with a useless hand (he cut off three fingers last year on the table saw) and I'm a guy in his 30s so I don't think it would be fair for me to retaliate physically, but if he does it again oh man... so what should i do?
I had a problem with a Sgt in the military that gave me a lot of shit. Made my life miserable.

He came in the paint booth one day and starting running his mouth.

I locked the door and we had a chat. I simply told him to say one more word and only one of us would walk out of that paint booth.

If you do something do it where no one can see you.

I flew mad. I hit the guy. Gave him a black eye.

We ended up in hr. Neither one of use got fired. The guy started to say he wanted me fired for hitting him and I said I wanted him fired for sexual harassment.

We kept our jobs and the guy learned a lesson.

This is different from thieving muffins; he got physical with you, which gave you every right to respond in kind.

Your boss was a pretty understanding individual.

Did the guy ever fuck with you again?

It didn't go straight to the assault. There were numerous times I warned him, and he shrugged it off. The last time he pushed me and said "What ya gonna do?" while laughing. Reasoning and restraint doesn't always work with some people. That's when you need to decide how to handle it. So I ended it, quickly and in undeniable terms. I understand escalating violence, it needs to be taken into account for the situation. If I was worried they'd go to a level I wouldn't I'd find others means. You need to weigh all the options.

I never said this was the only option, only if he involved HR/LEO it takes other options of the table. Civilization? We're still just tribal communities killing each other for basic resources, just now we have bigger sticks. Doesn't seem much different from the last few thousand years.
