ttystikk's hydro technique.

So I've been doing a ton of research in preparation for getting my first grow off the ground and have become intrigued by all the things that were going on in @ttystikk 's garden. Much was said about his vert setup but I didn't see much discussion about his hydro setup at all. I reached out to him last night for more info but he suggested I create a new thread and tag him in.

Anyway, take it away @ttystikk . I (and I'm sure many others) are curious to see what you've currently got going on.

So I might as well start at root level.

I ran RDWC for years with good success. More recently, I have been using Tupur Royal Gold substrate. Interestingly, I use the very same nutrients with both, in the same ratios.

Hydro-gardens.com is the bunch who make the dry nutrient salts. I use their hydroponic special 5-11-26 with micro nutrients, in conjunction with calcium nitrate, magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) and occasionally even a bit of MKP, or monopotassium phosphate.

Veg
2 parts mix
2 parts calcium nitrate
1 part epsom salt

I've run this all the way through bloom with good results.

I have some bloom formulas as well but I haven't tested them more than once or twice.

I was running about EC 2.0 at pH 5.8 in RDWC and EC 2.4 at pH 6.0 in Tupur. These may not be ideal but again they produced good results.

There's no magic in the nutrients. Keeping things simple and consistent works just fine.

So are you using a technique similar to Hempy Bucket?

Also, what made you switch away from RDWC in the first place?

Yep, I plan on using this formula. Thanks for sharing it with us, btw.

If it matters, are the ratios are by weight, or by volume?

What is your watering/fertilizing regimen like, and do you water until you get runoff?

I was getting inconsistent results with RDWC,I think I've since figured out what my problems were and I might go back.

I was getting consistent results with Tupur, but my yields were lower. Maybe because I was only using a 5 gallon bucket.

Might do better if I had a bigger container. The technique was a deep tray under the bucket. I'd put a gallon in and it would fill the tray and the plant would drink it all back up and be dry by the next day.

Yes it matters because different dry salts have different densities. ALWAYS by weight! Also, I strongly recommend you make the biggest batch of mix that you'll use in 2-3 weeks, and use it as a stock solution. Just stir before using. I ran 200g of mix per gallon, so I could get 100g of mix by dipping out a half gallon. This way it gets plenty of time to fully dissolve.

How much lower were your yields using Tupur? Are you planning on using a larger container for the next round?

The simplicity of this setup really appeals to me. Seems like there is very little to go wrong. I understand you experienced diminished yields using this technique in comparison to RDWC, but I think that would be an acceptable trade-off for a newbie like me.

Wouldn't accumulating salts eventually become a problem though? Do you have protocols in place to manage that, like periodic flushes with plain/RO water?

Excellent advice, thank you.

Hey bro been using Hydro-Gaardens 4-20-39 for a few days with MagS and CalN.
So far so good.

I am using 5 gallon cloth and turpur. Good run at 2.6 a light SE hydrofarm. My former mate's nute line but he kind of disappeared.

I am considering 7 gallon cloth pots next time. What do you think? Ceilings are 7 to 7.5 ft. Thanks.

Go for it! Tell me how it does, what is your nute formula?

My best per plant yields went from over 30 oz to about 25oz. My average didn't change much.

I'm going to try bigger buckets next time.

Side note i just started adding 1/3 growstones to my tupur and a touch of green sand. Ya yields are down from rdwc but aroma and flavor are up. Then again i think my curing chops have improved with more patience.
Interesting additions. What do you think you gained with these amendments?

Well i was trying to drown one so it needed cut a bit. Threw in some greensand because it was next to my growstones... lmao... pretty sure that bag just was to tight..
I never pack Tupur tightly, I just fill the bag and tap it on the floor a few times to settle it.

The main thing to remember about it is that you have to let the plant dry out between waterings. If it's still wet when you add more you risk drowning it.
