All right everyone just read a very long study from a university. I wont go into detail and make this short so everyone can do this right away. You know how hydro setups use air stones in the water to mantain root health. The study grew a large amount of clone plants (no not pot) half were watered with plain distiled water the other half was watered with the same water but an air stone was placed in the water and oxygenated before those plant were watered. 15-25% increase in total yield no shit! So to sum things up buy a airstone and keep it running 24/7 in your watering can. If you have a lot of plants water half this way an tell everyone how it turns out.

Putting an airstone in your reservoir oxygenates the water. It also helps if you use tap water. It also helps by removing some of the chlorine in the water.

Google the term "protein skimmer". In essence, dissolved organic compounds will be caught up in the surface of the bubbles, creating a foam that can be skimmed off. This is bad.
If you're gonna aerate your water this way, do it BEFORE adding nutes, or you'll just take them out of solution.
It will definately help tap water by accelerating the escape of chlorine, as chlorine is a free radical.
I ain't sure of the ratio, but I've heard that peroxide (3%) can be added to the watering can to oxygenate the water.

Highly oxygenated, high quality water IS good for your plants.

"Protein Skimmers" only work well in a saltwater filtration setup. If you don't have very very salty water, ie: the ocean, then you will have no problems. We don't grow plants in saltwater.

If anyone ever takes a gander at the organics section you will see that just about everyone working in organics uses this method to make teas to feed to their plants. Oxygenating your water with organic nutes keeps all of the microorganisms alive and well oxygenated so they can work harder for your plants.

I used to keep reef aquariums. You are correct on the principles of a skimmer but incorrect in the context of this thread on aerating water for plants. Protein skimmers typically work well for SALTWATER. In order to get any foam created from compounds in freshwater you would require a massively strong jet of air injected into a vortex of swirling water. It simply will not happen with an itty bitty airstone sitting in a jug of water dude.
I aerate my nutrient solution for 24 hours before feeding and have not had 1 problem.

ther is an easier option than the airstone! next time ur in the supermarket pick up a bottle of sparklin water! they do this in my local for 17p for a 2litre bottle! make sure u pick up the plain water not the mineral!!!

sparkling water contains co2 not o2. o2 is what roots need. co2 is bad for roots

Also buying gallons upon gallons of sparkling water is not easier then spending $13 on a pump and airstone and getting free aerated water for life.

But misting the plants with it will increase growth. :hump:

Because the water lands on the plant, releases the Co2 and your plant takes it in.

Many people use this method along with the yeast in a bottle. (if they cannot afford a proper Co2 setup)

I personally think it's brilliant, people should do it if they cannot afford a decent Co2 setup!

As for aerating water. More Oxygen promotes more root growth!
