USA's prison system surpasses Soviet Gulags

Many Americans are quite convinced that they live in one of the freest nations on the planet. Even if they don’t think that we are the freest, they still believe that our population has far more rights than the vast majority of the human race. However, these people tend to ignore our large prison population. Can you really call it a free country when that nation restricts the freedoms of such a large percentage of its population, most whom are convicted of nonviolent crimes?

What’s more shocking, is that our prison population has reached an ominous milestone over the past few years. The number of Americans who were in jail and prison, or on probation and parole, was 7 million people by 2009. When you include former inmates who have since left our prison system, you wind up with 19 million people as of 2010. This number exceeds the 18 million people who endured the Soviet Gulag system, between 1929 and 1953.

While the conditions in the gulags were far worse than American prisons, our facilities still utilize slave labor and torture techniques like solitary confinement to keep their inmates in line. And with a per capita incarceration rate that might only be exceeded by countries like North Korea and Cuba, there’s no reason to believe that the United States is still among the free nations of the world.

So let's all bitch about mj laws being lightened. ;)
Damn slaves eh Rob?

Could be worse, you could live in a place where they would just shoot you for your opinion.
It helps keep prison numbers down.
The land you seek does not and cannot exist.

Hey Rob. This thread is talking about incarceration rates being through the roof in the U.S and you're bitching about legalization and regulation in another thread.

Pretty stupid considering a large number of those non violent criminals are being enslaved for life by getting felonies for selling some weed.

You appear to be an all or nothing type, without understanding that laws and regulations, that are fair and balanced for all, are needed protections from all sorts.

Learning curve like a rainbow?

Laws such as the one you mention that limit peaceful self determination are not "fair and balanced" they are a lesser evil. Lesser evil is still evil.

A well kept slave might disagree with your point of view, as he is nevertheless still a slave.

So in order to prevent an entity from coming in and seizing power over others, we must first embrace an entity coming in and seizing power other others? Please sit down, before you fall down from your dizzying circular argument.

Nope. I have wings and do not worry about falling off.

How do you keep people in line from creating kayos and furthering lawlessness ?

The one`s ordered by a King, which you haven`t named yet.
Okay, I was being figurative. There are many many virtual lords operating within the system which is omnipresent and derives its source of power from force (just like a king) rather than from consenting participation.

Anyhow, is there nothing you would change to the present situation? You think a coercion based system which delivers lots of bads and disservices along with a few goods and services* is the best there can ever be?

You accept the status quo as a finished and wonderful product?

*The goods and services which are provided could still be provided absent coercive goverment, instead relying upon a free market to accomplish it.

The fact that the world is leaving their home to come here and not China speaks volume to our system compared to others. When people start mass migrating to Iran, I will consider your advice, til then, the one I have is not perfect, but works.

prisons in USA actually used to serve as a reform method. They were similar to boot camps and actually served as a deterrent.
Now, prisons are filled with mentally ill individuals. Prison is a place we Americans put people to forget about them. We need to reform our government as a whole. People are heartless and self involved and are happy to not think about human beings sitting in a jail cell getting butt raped and starving.

Americans are complacent. Things are baaaaaaaaad..... When will we overthrow our f'd up gov? Uhm....Iceland anyone?

The only reason that is true is because everyone is mind fucked about America. People travel the world to move to Germany. That's a move that actually would pay off in the long run. We have 1/4 of the entire worlds prisoners in the U.S. That's what we do here, we don't help ppl, we throw them away and forget about the. Like they are animals. We treat our animals in America better than our people. Doesn't that bother you? You are deluded if you think America is what they tell you it is. That's naive. Look at the truth and fact check yourself

Germany would never allow 19 million migrants to cross her boarders and just blend in,...Don`t kid yourself.

There are people in prison only because they were not killed for their crimes, which would be a better justice depending on the crime. You cannot fix the last guy to shoot up a theater full of people because he chose to do so, you kill them and be over it. At least you can pray for them. Animals are more complacent than people are. They are also more vicious and ruthless. After more than half a century,...I can draw my own conclusions.

We have more than 300 million people in America, those prison numbers fool you.
