MAZARI fems, DWC & CFL's :-)

Hi,

THis is the follow up grow to my recent 'Northern Lights' thread which I'm stunned to see recieved over 10,000 views!

It's all change this time, 4 x feminised MAZARI seeds from seedsman ( mazari-sharif x skunk #1) in a simple DWC (deep water culture) set up. Keeping things simple as I can I have constructed a new 'growdrobe' that is bigger than my recent cabinet and has increased headroom.

The set up:

1 intake fan at bottom left.
1 exhaust fan fitted into top panel.
1 circulation fan.
1 air pump/ air line splitter and 2 airstones.
PLastic tank.
350watts of CFL's mainly 2700k's but using mainly 6500's for vegging.

Cabinet temps steady at 76.
PH adjusted down to 6.0

Seeds are Mazari by seedsman (www.seedsman.com), I grew thier Afghani a couple of years back and loved it!

DAY 1: 31st October- Halloween :o

Seeds have cracked and need to go in ASAP. Off I go to buy my perlite and its sold out! PLan B ....... no choice but to put them in a mix of organic soil and perlite ( that I had left). No harm done, those roots will quickly grow out of it.

Pots are 4" and the res level is 2" below so theres a nice bit of gentle bubbling and splashing to the bottom the pots to get things started :-)

Still to do:

1. Paint internal walls white.
2. Lightproof all doors etc (although the cab is in a spare room kept dark).

Won't make this initial post too long so I'll add a few pics to get us on the way. I'm always happy to answer any questions etc :-)

Hey Mature Smoker! I saw that the NL thread was dying down. Mine are just two weeks old and I started a thread concerning them and also the other stuff I have on the vine. Im building organic soil of late and hoping my mix will do me two NL well. When Im ready to pot up and go into flower hopefully my mix will do the trick.

Anyhow, what was your final weight per plant and how was the smoke?

Im subscribing to your new thread here. Please pop in and check out what Im dabbling at.

By the way, your new set up looks really good! We are doing similar things with venting and nearly the same type and wattage of light. If you have some pointers I will surely take em!

Cheers:bigjoint:

SICC, good to see you here again :-)

OLd Coot :-) I just took this one especially for you! I got just under an OZ and a Q dry from the last plant, but I'm happy to prove to myself that you CAN break that 1oz barrier with CFL's and a short 2 weeks veg. She was a small plant as you saw.

Heres a the shot, 2 generations of NL buds. mother and cutting. The fresher bud just 10 days dry is on the left and some buds from the mother plant on the right. The latter is slightly compressed as its part of my 'stealth reserve', tucked away for that 'rainy day' :-) The bit in the bag is what I'm smoking from now, again from the previous harvest so its a good 8 weeks cured now, very strong hit but still slightly lacking in any distintive flavour, but I'd say from long experience thats just the Northern Lights for you?... I'm not complaining!

I will have a read through your thread too :-)

DAY 2 of 18/6.

24 hours later and all 4 are out of the shells :-) Will keep the humidity domes over them for a little longer. Bottom of the medium is being gently 'splashed' by the bubbles. Water level is currently just 2 " below the pots. PH 6.0.

DWC this time huh ? Plants will be budding in no time ! :peace:
Good to see you back RPsmoke, sicc, GFK. :-)

Kookiemonsta, are you going to run a journal here?

Thanks for looking in here Joker420.

UPDATE: DAY 4 of 18/6. 3rd November.

Roots are showing through the bottom of the pots now. I wanted of course to use 100% perlite but couldn't get hold of any locally at short notice so they had to go into a mix but all's good.

Seedlings look good and strong. PH rises slightly through the day to around 6.4 but a couple of drops of PH down knocks it back to 6.0.

I currently have just 200watts of the CFL's switched on but have a total of 350watts to use in there as things progress.

Still have more work to do in the cab. I constructed the crude cover to deflect the intake of cool air upwards and the temps hold steady at a touch above 70 now with doors closed. Once the rest of the lights go on I may need to add another fan maybe but the airflow through the cabinet is very good for now. The exhaust fan is fitted in the centre of the top panel :-) I'm working now on raising the tank closer to the lamps but after 2 years of growing short, heavily LST'd plants I'm going to let these ladies stretch a little!

Few pics.

I am using a bubbler on my second plant right now I have had it going a little while. I noticed that your plants (bottom of the pots) are a good ways away from the water. Mine (Stone filled Basket) are about 1/2" into the water, is this wrong? I have a lite color to my leaves and I feel like something is wrong. since the other plant is so dark (in perlite hempy). The leave are a little lighter in color since this pic. Also does PH go up on it's own? I was under the impresion that the PH would go down on its own since it's chlorine content goes down.

jjmd, I'm just 2" from the water level, looks further in that pic as I lifted the side up. The bubbles are splashing the bottoms of the pots and young roots. I do the same as this guy:

"Putting bubbles in your ponics"

Are both your plants the same strain? That one looks fine to me. You could just try raising slightly and let the bubbles do the work?

PH can rise in DWC but its not too dramatic, just 2 tiny drops on PH down drops it to bang on 6.0.

Bubble the hell out of that water use as much airstones as your budget allows you to. Don't even waste money on pumps and bs like that. Bubbleponics works just fine with just the bubbles.

Yes, drippers and feeders are a more recent addition to 'pure' DWC method which has been around for many years.
Many DWC grows are messed up by overcomplicating things, overfeeding or chasing PH. Bubbles are the key :-)

UPDATE: DAY 6 of 18/6.

Roots are just ready to touch the water but they're enjoying the oxygen rich environment in there. PH has risen from 6.0 to 6.4 in last 48 hours which is pretty good. I don't want to keep adding PH down unless I have to and 6.4 is within acceptable range still. I'll check again tomorrow.

Just a couple of pics, next few days should see some improved growth.

Pebble layer is purely decorative, I live by the beach!! :-)

hi maturesmoker dumb ass question but what does DWC stand for ???

cheers
Hi mate, thanks for looking in here :-) ....not a dumb question at all ........DWC is Deep Water Culture..... one of the simplest methods of hydro, save perhaps the Hempy method. Roots hang in a tank of water that is being constantly 'bubbled' by a simple aquarium airpump via a couple (or more) airstones. This oxygen rich water increases growth rates and thus yield. The more air bubbles the better, thus the term 'bubbleponics'.

Nice grow you got going there :-)

Just been sitting by them, having a glass of wine and a smoke :-) It's the one spare room in the house that I am allowed to smoke in :-) wife and teenage daughters understand and give me space in there, I was just thinking how much I love this hobby still after so many years, every new grow is like a fresh adventure and its a stimulating challenge! Bit like bringing up kids

Tested PH and its 6.2 today. Still waiting to paint the inside of the growdrobe but it's pretty nice in there atm.

Thanks again SICC :-) I try to keep everything as simple as I can.

UPDATE DAY 9. 18/6.

Well, the suns shining here this morning so I decided to do some baking! I've been experimenting with canna-cuisine for many years :-) I reckon I have tried just about everything from brownies, cookies/biscuits, savoury snacks, drinks etc BUT I keep on coming back to these simple 'scones' (well I am an Englishman!!) with dried fruit. probably the best experience was a couple of years ago when I was passed some sativa oil by a good friend. It was just a small peppercorn size runny mess wrapped in plastic film. I scrapped it into some mushrooms (normal shrooms that it!!) and fried them. Both my wife and I were completely stoned for hours, but a real 'uppy' stone, almost trippy at times...Jesus, am I getting too old for all this?.....Nah :-). Anyway I digress, apologies. Included a couple of shots of my 'canna-scones' ...7grams of nicely cured and destalked Northern Lights from August harvest made into butter then into 14 -16 scones. Anyone wants the recipe just ask, I first published this simple recipe on 'Marihemp' forum back in 2001 :bigjoint: They freeze really well and get you nicely stoned

Right, back to the grow. Its day 9 from germination. Roots are now touching the res so they're drinking from the res now. I removed them to have a check on the tank, PH 6.2 and holding steady, I wont add more PH down until it rises, 6.2 is within acceptable range for DWC. Temps today are 72 in the cab and I currently have just 280 watts of bulbs switched on. Couple more days and I'll give them the lot! Water temp remains nicely cool. I'm happy :bigjoint:

Here's the pics.
