YYC Grows yellow plants :-(

Hi All,

I've grown veegies in the garden and had decent success. I've grown some weed a decade ago and had a good harvest. These days my indoor gardening skills are sadly lacking. The last grow I tried the plants turned yellow and nothing I did seemed to change that. I thought my pH was off so I decide to get a Bluelab hoping it would help. This time I'm going to document things and hopefully you guys and gals can give me a push in the right direction! I'm in Calgary, AB and low humidity is normal here, I have problems keeping the house at 30% RH. The grow tent has even lower humidity so that might be my main problem, im not sure. Here is a list of my supplies and equipment.

  • 1 square meter tent.
  • 3 QB 288 panels run from a 420watt meanwell power supply
  • Bluelab combo meter
  • city water at around 180 ppm or RO water
  • Maxigro and MaxiBloom are primary nutrients
  • Promix HP is the growing medium, slurry test gives a pH of 6.1
  • Cheap soil moisture meter
  • 6 inch carbon fan with DIY fan venting outside the tent.
  • fan in the tent to gently blow on the girls.
I planted 2 Kasmir Kush and 2 Blueberry from SeedKing.com on Feb 3,2019. The plants were just getting there second true set of leaves when planted.

Hi :) It's been brutal w/ the cold, eh? Lowered humidity while also keeping the heat up? lol... Same probs. I've kept my temp about 5 degrees less than your pic, and the humidity goes up. I've even had to go w/ a quick humidifier boost and it doesn't take long - so keep an eye on it - then close everything up to see if it keeps that balance. Have had some luck w/ that, but it's been a manual job lately w/ a lot of baby-sitting.

Thanks guys that helps. I knew that low humidity was an issue but I didn't realize that it could cause the plants to turn yellow the way it did. I'll try adding more humidity and keeping the temps down, hopefully I can get this back on track. :peace:

They're still looking good though ;-) Will watch for your updates. Oh, and it's supposed to get warmer in a month or so... hahahaha. OMG.

Thanks Myke, I already have a chart for vpdvpd. I didn't realize growing s,o far outside the recommended vpd range would cause the problems I was seeing. All part of the learning process. I've got humidifier in the tent now and it's looking way better. P_20190222_110024_vHDR_Auto.jpg

Wow, that was quick! Nice going. Just watch out for a white powder if you're using tap water in the humidifier... using distilled or R/O is recommended for our hard water - but I'm not in the city, so it's probably worse here. I had to get a distiller for mine - and it's an ultrasonic cool spray like yours (but it's an elephant). He's cute and blows mist out of his trunk, lol. (:

Mine isn't cute, it's decades old but works great still. I didn't want to use it as filling out and cleaning it is a pain. We have always used reverse osmosis water with it. I wouldn't use this beast with tap water because of the mineral powder that gets all over. How far from town are you located Satindy?

Lucky you having the R/O. That Sunbeam is decades old? Not bad for an antique! (The elephant just makes me smile, haha.)
Where I am all depends on where you are, lol... but it's about 5 degrees colder (or hotter) and generally 1.5 hrs away from YYC...

oh gawd, between the cold, humidity and getting started... pretty sure my yellow leaves have everything to do with me! But pain4life's temp/humidity is looking much better now. Waiting to see if he has noticed any changes in the plants yet... (Thanks for the link & info Myke)

Thanks myke and Satindy for the help, most of my plant issues are self inflicted as well! I've not noticed any changes yet but trying to dial in a humidity level on this old mister is a pain. I'll most likely pickup that inkbird controller when I can as that would make it easier.

@SatIndy not trying to stalk you just curious is all. I'd love to be back on my parents small farm with some monster Ganga growing in the garden. Sigh ... Dream on.

Good afternoon, pain4life... no worries, I'm not trying to stalk you either, lol. Just being cautious on here - and it's rather comforting to have someone in the same area to kick around ideas for the same probs. Currently having heating issues :( It's so fkn cold at night, ha. Have been researching the not-so-great effects it can have on recovery when lights go on, etc. - and have a feeling it's locked out P. Ugh. Not that you'd notice, from the multitude of sins committed so far to pick from, lol :dunce: Using 600w LED, so not a lot of generated heat - and, funnily enough, was just checking out that Inkbird controller (again)... and wondering how many more books I'm gonna have to sell to get that. Lol... Caution "starving artist" at work. It's on the Wish List, that's for sure. We shall keep in touch, yes? :peace:

@SatIndy, I dont blame anyone for a bit of apprehension when it comes to grow room security. As far as low night time temps what sort of light schedule are you running? Perhaps run the lights in the night time if possible? Do you have a grow journal I can follow?

My old sunbeam mister doesn't seem to have very good control of humidity levels. It's either a desert in the tent or a rain forest. The rise in humidity is great for the plants, I'll just have to get a new humidity controller (ink-bird) or use a different humidifier. Here is a picture from just before lights out last night.
