I've always grown my own until this past April. I am a MMAR holder (PPL & DG) covered by the injunction, but was shut down by my Insurance Co.

Without going into great detail of a 5 year long, hard sought battle against my homeowners insurance company, they dropped me for growing MMJ in my residence. This happened just at the start of the Allard trial, when Conroy put an insurance industry expert on the stand, saying that MMJ homeowners insurance policies were available in Canada. This was an out right lie! The only insurance company in Canada (Lloyds of London) issuing those policies, stopped doing so when the MMPR came into effect!

I was eventually able to purchase a homeowners policy through Lloyd's of London, but they insisted that no MMJ be grown on the property...inside or out until a decision comes from Phelan.

I've been in contact with my insurance broker since the JT win, and Lloyd's is staying steadfast, no MMJ grown until a Phelan decision, or legislation from the new government.

So a message to all of those currently growing in your residence, you are not covered for total loss. Please refer to your home owner policies for the "grow ops" clause. Check it out, it's there.

God forbid anything happen to your home that constituted a total loss, but be advised…you're insurance company will fight you tooth and nail to not pay because of that "grow op" clause in every Canadian homeowners insurance policy.

I recommend that you all govern yourselves accordingly…

That's why I grow in my shed. 2 years ago a guy from our area had his house burn down and the insurance wouldn't cover it bc he had plants in his basement.

@WHATFG...totally fumed up for sure. Keep in mind insurance companies set the rules as to what is covered. From their perspective, MJ is still an "illegal substance" for most people in Canada. Until we have a court decision or new legislation, we can't force them to insure us. :(

i would look into a human rights claim. you're being discriminated due to a medical reason. the Federal Government said you're OK to grow for yourself. the insurance company says you can't.

Filed and dismissed!

Again, nobody can force insurance companies in Canada to insure something that they perceive as a risk....legal or not!

I was told the risk is even too great for tomatoes… LOL!

I was denied for the typical propaganda issues…ie: structural damage, electrical issues, mold…etc. Even though my space is probably one of the safest 4k grow rooms in a residence in the country, it did not matter to the insurance company. I have been inspected by the OPP, Hydro One with no reported issues, and was actually praised for the safety of the set up from both.

I offered the insurance company to come in and do an on-site inspection themselves, they weren't interested to take on the risk.

Check it out for yourselves. Call around to some insurance companies in Canada and tell them that you're a Hellth Cannuckistan licensed MMJ grower looking for house insurance. You will not find a single insurance company in Canada at this time that will sell you residential house insurance…guaranteed, even in BC !
