who has experience with thermos extraction?

I too get the Vector quintuple, I was thinking of going with Colibri just because people say the Vector is a hit or miss. I don't do the mirror test (but I will from now on) to test each can to make sure they are cleaner. That's a damn good price haha.

ok sorry for not updating in awhile.. i successfully ran my first few batches.
i used a large thermos from walmart, 20 bucks. used some pliers to get the plastic out of the lid, drilled a small hole..
didnt put any vent holes cuz the lid was pretty loose on there i could see room for air.
took out of freezer empty & filled it with 2 cans of butane, added frozen kief. sat for 30 min+ first fun with a few swirls
attatched 2 hose clamps together and put on 2 coffee filters just like on my tube and put it upside down.. came out so gold.
put another can from the freezer (1 covered it enough since the kief was still soaked in butane) and let this sit for about an hour.
still comes out as gold as when i put popcorn buds in my tube.. so i decide to do a 3rd soak with 1 more can. comes out with some gold but more clear now.
called that good. i put it on a pyrex and dried it in case i decide to see about test running it once more or not.. still smells kinda kiefy lol
i will try to post pics.. i havent weighed it but pretty sure its right around an ounce and i used a good 3 oz+ of kief so far.
when it was close to done water purging i stirred it and it was all clumping together into one big golden ball never had it happen like this looked so dank.
now i have to vacuum purge it but im new to that also just got my vac what pressure do you think i should use i think it wants to be a wax

I would use -29.5" Hg.

Soaking kief sounds intense. I'm about to do a popcorn LostCoastOG run tomorrow.
I feel like columns might be more efficient since they constantly wash the oils down and oil where as with the soak you strain then ultimately have to flip the thermos right side up again allowing residual oils to settle to the bottom needing to be rinsed out again. If i were you i would just soak from a lot longer man, Fadedawg told me not to be afraid because they had soaked for 6hrs or something and still got great results...and you're using kief so i'd even be less worried about a long soak time.

NOTE: two runs ago i was soaking some trim for a guy...not much for buds included mainly just really dry trim. I let it soak for like 10hrs the first and 10+ the second just to push things to the max..i can't remember exact soak times. Green was pulled from the trim and plenty of it. I think i mentioned before i'll probably stick to around 3-5hrs for soaks, maybe 6-8 for the first soak of really dank bud just because i go for quantity...and the quality is still great(after winterizing the crud out)

Well off to Piece of Mind to see if i can find myself a healthstone pipe or something convenient to smoke oil on the go with...aside from my thermovape which is annoying because it gets hot holding it especially when it's around 95F outside but i swear the batteries last longer than when it's below freezing.

I basically have to go with Vector if i want that price....it's the only brand other than a much more expensive brand. i'll try to remember and look when i go there in a sec.

The butane is SToK FYR. 10/can compared to 6/can at the shop

POM doesn't carry health stone pipes. they have only one health stone piece and it's for a bong. cool but i already have a domeless.

How well to the lids stay on? I was debating between those Slik staks and the NoGoo... They claim the lid stays on very securely with these...Last thing I'd want is for one to open in my pocket and get all sorts of pocket lint and fuzz in my stash...lol

lids seems to stay on well but the whole container is flexible so no go on the all day pocket ride or the lid will most likely get peeled off. The threaded lid is a better idea. I don't even plan on putting them in my pocket

Haha...yeah. I don't often dab on the go. But once I pick up a healthstone pipe, all bets are off. I keep trying to find one for a good price, but everyone still wants an arm and a leg for them. Though I do have a couple travel rigs, and have been known to get random people more stoned than they've been in years... SORRY for the threadjack, OP.

Get a SubZero extractor with dry ice. The 1/2 lb. model's dry ice sleeve is wide enough for commerical dry ice pellets to fit in w/o having to break it up. Blast with butane from the freezer, and blast at -65F. There is no "pooling" of butane vapors, because there is no vapor.

Just started a soak...20 grams of some pretty decent Trainwreck nug that i chopped up in a jar with some scissors about as fine as BBs before placing into the thermos and very lightly packing just the very top. took 2 cans of butane. Been 2.5hrs now waiting til 3.5 or 4.

hey guys.. have a few questions now on the vac purging..
i dont have a double vac system or whatever but i can get a good -27 or 27.5 with 2.5cfm one
im wondering, when you vacuum purge, how long does it usually take to get it to shatter, wax, honeycomb..?
and do you just turn it on and let it go the whole time or do you turn it on and off any number of times to let it settle and re-rise?
does the chamber have to sit in a hot water bath while purging? and the temp affects the outcome too? what happens if no heat is used?
my current chamber is made of some kind of plastic i think. im not sure how i feel about sitting it in hot water without worrying about some sort of plastic leach :/

Well I achieve shatter best when my oil is no more than 1mm thick and sitting at around 115F under full vac with the pump continuously running for 30min-1hr-2hr...depending on how much ethanol i chose to leave in the oil before vacuuming.
So yes, warm your vacuum chamber somehow, i use an electric skillet.
If you want honeycomb/wax you need to vacuum longer usually and maybe play around with the oil a bit to get it to "muffin" up with a lot of small bubbles. I'm no h-comb master i always go for shatter now because technically the longer you vacuum and longer you heat the more of those lighter terpens are being lost.

My shatter usually wants to turn to wax really fast though so i always end up with 80% shatter and the other 20% had started to wax up a bit. No biggie still tastes dank.

Watch your heat, sometimes you can over heat the oil...say 130-150F and it becomes gooey and more fluid, seems to loose it's ability to shatter unless you winterize or rewinterize.

No heat will result in a lot of the solvent to be trapped in the more solid/concrete oil, but i would also suggest starting at room temp, drawing the vacuum, then slowly raising the temp.
Works well if you're iffy in the first place. Just try not to exceed 120F until you know how your concentrate behaves.

there's a head shop in town and the guy sells these super thick pipes and he randy johnson'ed a spoon at the wall once, smacking a sheet of plywood he placed up just for that reason. Didn't break but i think that guy is crazy in the first place lol
