i have only been able to find a little info on the thermos butane soak method..
im wondering if anyone has experience doing it and when/how they prefer it..
i have over a lb of kief that is no longer selling and would much rather have some oil to smoke and spread around.
i have seen how to make the basic setup im more wondering if its worth it.. is the yield better?
& do you have to have it in your freezer while its soaking or doesnt that risk an explosion?
or would i just be better off mixing it with sugar trim and blowing it through my tubes?
    any tips/advice are appreciated

You don't have to put it back in the freezer, the thermos will keep it below freezing for a couple hours. Periodically swirl it gently to clear the boundary layers, but otherwise just let it sit in the shade with a towel covering it.

It doesn't dissolve rapidly at zero F, so it will take a couple of hours and you can always wash it again to get anything you left the first time.

A tube of herb and kif is another good way to do it. The herb prevents clogging.

You can extract it without herb using a Terpenator, if you use a 6" column.

The guy with the most time thermos extracting that I'm aware of, is probably Jump. If he doesn't catch this, send him a PM and pick his brain.

Yes...PLEASE DO NOT PUT BACK IN FREEZER.

It seems that you already know the consequences of doing so.

It could potentially blow the door right off, I've seen pics, not a pretty sight.

Just what FD said, the thermos insulation will keep it liquid long enough.

What I do is, when I leave it for 30 mins-2 hours to extract I put it in a small portable ice chest ( while covering it with a towel) to keep it nice and cold. I see this method working really well with kief. But ya no no in the freezer.

you can get those colemans stainless steel thermos' with the button tops, you could use that and use the button to releave any built up pressure while its outside, although it sounds like it wouldn't be to much of a problem, it still wouldn't hurt, putting it in an ice chest would work great as well

We leave the cork out, so that it doesn't build up pressure. Just the lid with the holes in it.

thanks, ive actually never done it with the thermos, iv sprayed into a mason jar sitting in a hotel style ice bucket filled with ice, but that was always bud, or bud and keif/hash.

It's the samething so you should be able to do just as good! I got a thermo to do it but I still need to break the inside (cup part) because it has some plastic which is bad :-/

Wow sorry for being to busy to even look. Lately since it's so damn hot out I've been placing my thermoses into an igloo cooler full of ice packs...dry ice would be better...and shutting the lid.
Keep in mind butane will pool up very very thick in the cooler so do be careful of ignition. that would be big boom i'm sure.
I performed my longest soaks ever the other weekend and finally had a little green extracted with the oil...wasn't quality trim and wasn't for me, my friend didn't care either. Good edibles he said.
Extracted for 10hrs the first soak and 8 the second soak...pretty much pointless to go that long anyways.

If you want uber bragging rights go ahead and soak the first round for 1hr-2hr IMO

But I go for quantity since it all seems to be really dank after winterizing anyways. 1st soaks are 3-5hrs then i refill and soak for another 6hrs.
Seems to be getting good results..check it:

Not the best pics but some really good TrainWreck extract. The final picture is the 1st extract on the left 2nd on the right. Idk if i heated too much during the vacuuming but the 1st wanted to change from shatter to wax fast. The 2nd stayed a nice shatter at 65-70F.

IMG_20130626_202344_341.jpg 24oz wide mouth...super easy to pack/unpack. I think i need about four of these guys.

I don't know if i'll ever get a column haha...just don't need to i guess. Can't wait to see your results!
    I LOVE RESULTS!!!!

...i really need to get some quality pics up...

Side note, of course the 2nd extraction can be less heady more sedative but i still find both extractions to be very similar.
My LCOG is sooo heady that i almost prefer to soak longer so that the oil actually has a good hybrid effect.

A friend of mine is hooking me up with like 160grams a week to extract for him to sell. His trim is soooo dry and getting old now it's turning out very dark. Fuckin stems so stiff i'm stabbing my fingers when breaking even tiny buds apart.
If you want the most aromatic and quality oil extract basically as soon as you have it trimmed up, even with the moisture left in the material, freezing it locks away most of the green and butane doesn't pull much of it anyways.
You might already know all that, i just wanted to mention it.

ok so i went out and bought a stainless steel thermos from walmart.. so i take the plastic piece in the lid out? its not supposed to screw closed than??
im kinda new to this site trying to upload a pic of the thermos and getting 'error 2038' after selecting file and hitting upload.. its only 38kb so it shouldnt be too large..
anyways im going to put the kief in the freezer tonight and the butane cans and thermos in there also.
how full of material do you fill the thermos? and will the thermos take a full can of tane or how much should i put for kief?
i will try to take some pictures of my process and results. thanks for all the tips ive been reading them just havent got the chance to write a response yet.

I don't worry about screwing it on tight anyways. My thermos will get sticky around the threads and i had a hell of a time getting it off once...
You need exhaust ports anyways, if you want you can just put one small one in the top and use the "loose lid" so exhaust while you blast as well.
There has to be some science behind the best arrangement for input/exhaust ports...like i was thinking that you don't want to have the input port right next to the exhaust because the exhaust draft will probably pull some of the input right out. So i would say def have the input exhaust on opposite sides of the lid or like i said maybe you can try putting the input port right in the center and use the loose lid to exhaust.
...i've been thinking about that a lot and it would be nice to have a specially designed unit to extract with butane....OH YA the Terpenator...i do have $750 saved up for play money.....
Is the picture the correct format? jpg, jpeg, png, gif?
I pack my thermose no more than 2-3inches from the top just due to LBSB...liquid butane splash back haha, once it'l pretty much filled to over the material i have experienced liquid butane splashing up and out the exhaust ports.
I pack my thermos then freeze it all together for a day or two.
Takes almost exactly 2 cans to fill my 24oz thermos fully packed, which seems to be about 80-100grams of material finely chopped up.
    Have fun man!

I think it might be better to add the material after you add the butane to the thermo. I sprayed while having my material in there and it had the whole spray back action too. Basically while I was spraying the material was flying around in the jar and some of it shot out it seems from the direct spray. Maybe with the thermo (instead of jar like I used) it'll help with that

Ummm i guess if your material can't actually be packed into the thermos it's def gonna be flying around while you blast. So if you have a bit of kief or w/e go right ahead and fill with butane first and then add material.
After i've strained my first soak and some of the top material is now looser so when beginning the second round a bit might fly out.
It's not perfect, but there's no way to efficiently pack a butane filled thermos full of plant material so the packing must be done first.

Bottom line is you're going to have some plant material flying around while you blast unless it was literally packed to the brim but then you can't fill it full of butane with out shoot some out the exhaust for sure.
Each container used for a soak might have a dif max pack height and a min pack density to help prevent this.
You'll just figure out what works best for your setup at that point.

Ahhh, that's where I went wrong! I didn't pack it because I wasn't sure if I was supposed to pack it like a tube or just have it in! I'll deff pack it in well next time! I need to break off that plastic liner first, the jar method is nice but I bought the thermo for this reason lol. I let my first extraction soak for thirty mins. I think i'm going to do one and a half hours next time. And Imma pack it! How much should I pack it? Where it is hard to move the material?

650b, what size and brand of butane do you use? Another thing I didn't do is chop up the material fine, hell I didn't do anything to it lol.. I thought if I grinded it might release a lot of chlorophyll, forgot butane doesn't really pull to much green (like ISO which I do more so). So two new things to try out

Try packing a wadded up coffee filter on top, to prevent blowing out particles.
