fox tail is when the leaf tips curl in i believe. this happens when the plants get too much N in their diet.

the fox tailing is the new calyx growth on the already nearly finished bud.

...foxtail'n can/will be caused by temps being too warm during the sleep period, during flowering. The top of your colas will grow in a tail shape....hence the name "fox tail"

heres what i pulled from a google search, it appears your right, people consider the protruding buds to be called foxtails. i should mention though that i figured he meant leaf tips curling under and thats why i said too much N.

"I had a crop like that a while back. Those "foxtails" are also referred to as banana buds. They are the last chance for a plant to reproduce before it dies. When a plant is damaged heavily, or close to death age wise, they will produce these long small buds (males for all practical purposes), that will eventually flower with a small yellow flower to pollenate themselves and seed before they die. Not bad bud, and it does smoke well, but does not look great in a bag. I usually pinch them off and mix them in later."
