Watching Recorded Sports

does anyone else think it's pointless to watch a sporting event when it's not live? i am watching the mens semifinals for australiian open and it's not live and i am trying so hard not to go on the internet and look at who won. it's so silly. i could just look up the winner and i don't need to see the match.

why would anyone watch a recorded sporting event? :?:

I do it all the time. I get the game rewind from NFL.com that allows you to watch every game for the last three years. I also use espn3.com a LOT, because I can get it on my phone or laptop and watch live or recorded games for free. Great for college sports. Some games are so good you can watch them again and again, like when the Lions crapped on Tim Tebow and the Broncos.
Plus it makes me feel like I'm sticking it to TheMan a little bit since I almost never see commercials anymore. Take that, you corporate bastards!!!1!!!one!!!!

I can't see it either. If the outcome has already been decided its pointless to sit thru the whole thing

its often difficult to watch a recorded sporting event. i have to avoid talking to anyone or they might mention the results

I will go a step further and say it's pointless to watch a sporting event even in real time. People that you don't know playing other people that you don't know and your only association is that you live in the same geographic region? How could the outcome of the event possibly have any real impact on ANYONE'S life? It is absolutely trivial

i am practicing great restraint by not looking up the outcome of this game. nadal may actually win right now!!! well, he may have won but we don't know yet because we didn't look at the results!!!!

lol guy. this is tennis & none of the players are from the US right now. i just like to watch. i don't watch with people or get excited for a particular team.

it kind of is a waste to watch sports at all maybe. you could just look up the scores and save yourself some time.

It's a hobby, a way to pass time enjoyably for some, etc. I could apply your logic to just about anything a human being might do outside of eating, sleeping or procreating and come up with the same end result, that it's "stupid" to do because it has nothing to do with me directly, but living that way would make life pretty boring.

But why though? How could those scores possibly have any impact to your life even in the slightest? It may satisfy curiosity you have, or give you something to talk about with people, but ultimately how could it possibly effect you?

The only reason I can think to watch sports is if it keeps you actively entertained. A lot of stupid movies and shows I watch have absolutely no redeeming values and will not have any impact to my life beyond the fact that they managed to keep my attention and keep me happy while I viewed. I can't really break it down and explain why I enjoy it, but I do, and that in an of itself is enough to justify watching my shows. But I get no satisfaction from watching sports. Watching someone that has true skill execute a move can be entertaining just to admire their mastery, but I would say 99% of sports don't really fit that bill. Sports just seem like a waste of time to watch. People that I don't know, and who don't care about me, playing other people I don't know and who don't care about me in a game which the outcome makes absolutely no difference to me or my life. I just don't understand it.

now i'm confused. if you don't care who wins then why are you so antsy to look up the score? just enjoy the match.

i don't think it's stupid at all to watch recorded sports. i love everything about the game of baseball. i'll even watch a game between 2 teams i don't even care about. i like to keep tabs on some of the players and just watch the greatness of the gameplay. sometimes even the commentary can wake up a dull game.

i like the twinge of excitement when things get close. it's an adrenaline rush. i start thinking of how i want things to turn out and suddenly i'm vested. i just like it. i actually pay for the mlb extra innings package just so i can watch games whenever i want.

watching sports is not a waste. it's like drugs for me.

NADAL WON.

i can get on with my day.

i thnk the reason i watch is because i don't have to pay a ton of attention and i can do other things while i watch this. usually during the day i listen to music and i don't watch TV.

You pretty much provided the answer for me. I don't watch a lot of tv really at all. There are tons of shows out there that are wildly popular and I've managed to make it through life without watching one second of any of them =). So I use sports (or history channel, discovery, etc) and music in much the same way you use movies and tv. To make life less boring when I don't have other things to do.

There are plenty of things to gamble on without propping up a multibillion dollar industry. I can get together with buddys and gamble with nothing more than some cards and some chips. If you are really hard up you don't even need that, just an event with an unpredictable outcome. And this doesn't really explain the fanaticism.
