Of course. The one time I'm aware of that topping isn't helpful is in a SoG, where you only want one cola per plant. Topping increases the yield of that plant, yes. Some strains respond better or worse to topping. It should cause the two shoots on either side of the top node left on the plant to start growing (faster). Up to all of the shoots left on the plant may spring up after topping but the ones closest to the light grow the fastest. Always cut with a sharp, sterile blade or scissors.
We top our plants and leave two nodes on each. After topping our strain, the top two shoots jump up and the bottom two grow but not quite as much. Once the top two shoots both have a node, we top them both, leaving the node on each. This causes the two shoots at each of those two nodes to start growing. By the time they really get going, the two shoots from the very bottom node on the plant reach canopy level, provided they received enough light. The plants then go into flowering with 6 stalks, each of which will grow a 1/2oz trim & dry bud by harvest.
