I would seal the holes but there is to many of them , and i'm not paying someone to fix them as i rent
The problem is there is holes on 2 fences that all lead to my neighbours yard ,
I have seen the rat run through them all .
And i'm not supposed to have a dog here , so i don't want to let my dog over into there yards incase they dob me in .

Ever thought about investing in a home security system (video cameras)?
They aren't that expensive and tracking the rats habits would be interesting.

One of my friends in the South has mice. She'd already left poison out by the time I told her that they'd die and stench out her flat. Poison slows down the heart rate and they go to warm boiler pipes and then die there. This can stink out a flat and

Sine I have poultry I sometimes get rats
I find the 3$ rat traps like they sell everywear work very well , when used properly
Always wear a new set of gloves whan handling the traps (rats smell very well), leave the trap unset with no bait for about 3 days against a wall that the rat is known to travel (rats almost always travel against walls/beams becouse they dont see weel) , Then set the trap with peanut butter smeared on the triger on bolth top and bottom, when setting the trap set the triger as sensitive as possible ,while wearing gloves and replace in the same place .
Most of the time I have caught the rat the next morning .
the next best thing is posion , DIY strychnine is simple to make and works VERY WELL

Strychnine Oats or Zinc Phosphide Oats. Available for pocket gopher control only and is a felony to use it in any way not stated on the label. But if some happens to spill out of the container while you were taking care of your "Pocket Gopher" problem you would have absolutely no control over that.
I will tell you that rats occasionally get into my supply and they take very very long naps, you know come to think of it mine still haven't woken up and its been a year.
In a totally unrelated subject I bet your pet rats love oats especially with a little raw blood from your next meat package, mixed with peanut butter, a pinch of sugar and put a dash of silver glitter in it from your daughters princess set. I bet if you hung that from a string about 4" above your pet rats walkway he would enjoy it. You can get extra lucky and put a tiny tiny fishing hook on some picture hanging wire and wrap your pet rats food around it and you might just have a rat in a leash. You know rat on a leash is the new iphone.

Not sure how much that costs but a cam system is pretty cool for a few more dollars. (not sure what you use in Oz)
This system includes a 500g hard drive but you can buy them for about half price providing your own hard drive.

Even if you live in an apartment they are nice to have.
Make temp mounts and move the system when you move out.
Hook it to your router and monitor your house from your cell phone or computer when away from home.
You could also set an 'alarm' area where the cam only records when motion is detected.

When I saw what you were building I hoped you didn't have any kids or pets wandering about your yard.
You also have to watch your'e neighbour's pets don't get caught up in it.

Be sure to use metal wire otherwise the rat will be free again.

No kids and animals around NN , apart from a stray cat or possum at night .

Subbed, Im interested to see how this all goes! I like how you've taken the fun tactical sort of way to it. I was in the vegetable garden awhile ago and a rat ran straight past me litterally a foot or two away then it scurried into the garage. Put out a trap out with cheese and bang 10 minutes latter had em. Been getting 2 per day since but its slowed down now haha

It's a little worrying though that a rat is out smarting me , tomorrow is a new day , i will re-group and plan ahead !

Do your homework before buying trail cameras
lots of models use IR lights that glow when triggered and spook the animals , also the camera ratting 7mp or whatever it is , can be limited by a cheap lense
Some of the higher end cameras can operate on wifi signals

I have one similar , works great.
Its infrared etc and does pics or video with sound, you would be amazed of who comes in your yard , i was.

They are awesome tools
1 of mine has a 'plot camera' feature , it basicaly takes a picture once a hour for a period of time , at the end of the season it gives a great show of 'seed to harvest'
