I'm hearing forecasts of some mind boggling amounts of rainfall over the next few days in Southeast Texas. Like a meter, from BBC.

The storm surge from the hurricane's landfall could hold the flooding from rainfall on the land for a longer period of time.

This could be an historic flooding event, worse even than the situation in New Orleans because of the area affected and the number of people involved.

Ever been through a hurricane?
Yes. This is one of those late August when the Gulf of Mexico water is very warm storms. Sad stuff. The areas around Pensacola, FL, New Orleans and the other areas are so dangerous because when a storm gets in the Gulf in July or August - the water is so warm.

The soil in texas is not good when you get heavy rainfall too.

This plus the long duration since the last major hurricane to hit the area will catch people by surprise. Getting surprised by a category 4 hurricane is a very bad thing.

Indeed. Saw too many examples of last minute plywood panics in the past. Middle class, working class and poor folks generally do not have the money to set aside for decent hurricane protection.; A Cat 4 is not nice.

Weather like this is why I'll never own property on the seashore. I'd feel like a sitting duck. I'll rent but never buy.

And then there's sea level rise due to global warming.

Hope any and all RIU peeps and your families in the path of this thing come out of it okay.

Hurricanes are no joke. Being stuck in a howler making landfall late at night is one of the scariest experiences on the planet.

It's beautiful but you're definitely taking a risk owning water front in Hurricane zones.

Spoke with a few gentlemen today from texas who were up here in BC fishing. They are pretty concerned for friends and family back home.

I do hope everyone comes out okay.

I'm absolutely certain there's going to be a body count anyway.

I fear the combination of storm surge and heavy flooding will make the count a big one.

If I lived anywhere around Galveston or Corpus Christi or on the coast I'd have hit the road a couple days ago and gotten far away.

People just don't take Mother Nature as seriously as they used to.

There might be more loss of life a hundred miles inland or more, few will be expecting the amount of rain they'll be getting over the weekend.
