the fact that i just read FACTS that state i needn't worry is where my opinion lies at the moment. :)
yeah well guess what the FACTS from the same people say butane is dangerous. and the FACTS want you to believe that when you're inhaling your butane flame you're not changing the thermodynamics thus causing some butane to not be burned because of the fact it is basically fighting against the wind of your hit.

you really think 100% of your butane is perfectly converted when you are hitting it? if the flame bends whatsoever, I guarantee you're not converting a percentage of that butane, that is going directly into your lungs.

I guarantee you all of their studies proving butane is a harmless substance involved the flame burning upright with no wind resistance whatsoever......

but hey good job man you've done some REAL detective work.

I'm kinda of surprised how this thread has turned out. Really though theres a lot better ways to tell someone you disagree with them without laughing at them.
And being a senior member of the public we( RIU) would expect better behaviour.
You laugh out right at somebodys opinion and then to go research the facts after. Strange way of doing things.. Why not ask for any facts? Or direct him to your source of info..?
I've been using lighters since i stopped using matches and im here too but i still remember when the Facts about tobacco were all good and no harm could be done..
Who knows whats the right answer but i would like to find out myself and i will now that i know about it so i have to thank pop for this post .

Anyway .. How do you make your own hemp wick?

i apologize if my attitude offends you. i meant no harm in stating my opinion. i hate to see people believe things simply because of "hype".

i think i posted the "right answer". there is no harm in using butane lighters. i can pull some more articles if you need me to.

and i don't think i laughed, i think i called BS. and i was right. :)

and I proved there is harm in inhaling unburned butane.

so how many of you stoners wanna bet your health in the long term on fdd's opinion?

I know for sure there's no way a gas can burn at 100% efficiency when it is under wind resistence, just blow on your lighter and look at how some of it burns and some of it doesn't as the flame struggles to stay lit.

I'm sure many people here can make up their mind for themselves based on what we both have said thus far.

Reactions

Spectrum of the blue flame from a butane torch showing molecular radical band emission and Swan bands

When oxygen is plentiful, butane burns to form carbon dioxide and water vapor; when oxygen is limited, carbon (soot) or carbon monoxide may also be formed.
2 C4H10 + 13 O2 → 8 CO2 + 10 H2O The maximum adiabatic flame temperature of butane with air is 2,243 K (1,970 °C; 3,578 °F).
n-Butane is the feedstock for DuPont's catalytic process for the preparation of maleic anhydride:
2 CH3CH2CH2CH3 + 7 O2 → 2 C2H2(CO)2O + 8 H2O n-Butane, like all hydrocarbons, undergoes free radical chlorination providing both 1-chloro- and 2-chlorobutanes, as well as more highly chlorinated derivatives. The relative rates of the chlorination is partially explained by the differing bond dissociation energies, 425 and 411 kJ/mol for the two types of C-H bonds. The two central carbon atoms have the slightly weaker C-H bonds.

you are funny fdd, I'll give you that.

I am on the same page as you and I am also still here.......yah!!!;)

I don't smoke in my house, all my smoking paraphenalia is in the one room so I doubt I'll come across those problems.

I don't own a car anymore, and always spark up my joints before I head off on my bike.

I come from Scotland, I am very use to the wind and have skinned up half way up mountains before without difficulty, the wind while lighting up is the last of my worries, lol.

Wow, it's really cool to be able to go through all these things and know I am prepared for all that comes my way.

Anything else? lol.

WFTW, hahaha.
OH NO'S!!!!!!!! lighter impurities.

lol

how do you use a wick in the wind? what about driving? what if you have your pipe and lighter in your hand, but you left the wick in the other room? do you get off the couch to get the wick, or cheat and just use the lighter?

i'm 45. i've been using lighters for over 25 years. i'm still here. :)

looks like some things were missed from the article:
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Butane said:
Inhalation of butane can cause euphoria, drowsiness, narcosis, asphyxia, cardiac arrhythmia, temporary memory loss and frostbite, which can result in death from asphyxiation and ventricular fibrillation. Butane is the most commonly misused volatile substance in the UK, and was the cause of 52% of "solvent related" deaths in 2000.[4] By spraying butane directly into the throat, the jet of fluid can cool rapidly to −20 °C by expansion, causing prolonged laryngospasm.[5] "Sudden sniffer's death" syndrome, first described by Bass in 1970,[6] is the most common single cause of "solvent related" death, resulting in 55% of known fatal cases.[5]
I just bought a boulder from beelasso, my hits better taste better poplars :-P j/k.

My wife has been after me to get the ital hemp wick, but belasso it is.

It isn't my thread so i deserve no apologly , im just simple member off this wonderfull comunity RIU who likes to read up on good growing techniques, strains reviews and chat about weed life every now and then without seeing all this BS. Its all to easy for good infomation to get lost cause of people replying like you did at the start.
Even though you cleared up your postion with some facts on the mater , which i respect as it shows your just blowing air but that was not what this thread was about.
If you have articles that you feel may help us in anyway why not start a thread on it ,i would gladly hear what you have to say maybe even get a proper debate going on in there. With some informed people in there as i think most people on here read this for the Hemp wax title ,not saying they don't know about this subject but i think a thread title "the effects of butane gas" may get more informed people involved.

Thanks for the reply Fdd

The inital cost is at most the same as buying a 200 ft roll of beeline.

After that you are looking at least five bucks for a new 200ft roll of polished hemp twine and maybe a few bucks for any extra ounces of beeswax you may need.

My first homemade roll was made on June 23rd, 2011 and I am still not done with the first 25 yards.

DIY: Make your own hemp wicks (For the sake of information I am not the guy in the video)

If anyone is going to make there own, find unpolished hemp twine. Polished hemp twine gives the flame a black smoke, a slight taste and seemingly makes the wicks burn faster. I can't say anything good or bad about using the polished or unpolished and dyed hemp twine since I have never used it to smoke with. Nor will I ever use it to make hemp wick with.
