Step by step custom AeroGarden hood (

I think it is BS that you have to buy those stupid lights from AG. And I dont even think you can get any in 2700K.

Anyways, I was had a problem with my lights going out intermitently. I popped open the hood and found my wires were shot. Since I want to be able to use whatever light I choose I decided to customize it. All the materials should be less than $35 at any reputable hardware store.

Heres what you need:

Phillips screwdriver
Wire strippers
Wire cutters
Two light sockets with pigtails
Extension cord, preferably 12 or 14 guage
Wire nuts
Electrical tape
Didnt actually need the zip ties like I though I was.

Step one: Remove hood from AG and take out lights.

Step two: Remove hood support by pushing down on the little tab that holds the rod onto the hood. It can be found by looking through the vents in the top of the hood. It is directly above the support rod.

Step three: remove all the screws in the hood. This includes the two next the S-plug. I already took mine apart here, mocked it up for the pic.

DSC_0005.jpg

Step four: remove socket and wire assemblies. We are going to reuse the white part where the light plugs in. You should be able to just break the wires off the socket. Throw wires away. Again, mine was already apart. Hopefully yours is still attached.

Step five: Now, if you look at the original sockets, you should see two little tabs that are used to clip the lights in. Break these off.

DSC_0015.jpg

Step six: After you break off the tabs, reinstall original sockets.

Step seven: Insert your new sockets, wires first, through the old receptacle.

DSC_0018.jpgDSC_0019.jpg

Step eight: Take your extension cord and cut the end off of it. Separate the wires. I just cut the ground off cause I dont really have anything to ground to in my tent.

DSC_0020.jpg

Step nine: Now comes the important part. Wiring. Some people are intimidated by wiring but there is nothing to it. I just wired all my hots together and all the grounds together.

DSC_0022.jpg

Step ten: Test. You dont want to get everything back together just to realize you messed something up. I generally run my CFLs for a full hour the first time I use it. Kind of a little break in period.

DSC_0025.jpg

Step eleven: This is by far going to be the hardest part. Putting the cover back on. It may take you a while to get the lid back on but stick with it. It will fit. If I had it to do over again I would use longer pigtails on the socket. This would get the wire nuts out of the way. After you fit it, screw everything back together and reinstall the support rod. Which can be tricky. Again, stick with it.

Step twelve: Crack open a cold one and sit back knowing that come flower time your AeroGarden is going to have the optimal spectrum for flowering.

I hope this helps someone. If anybody has any ideas to improve or make this process easy please speak up.

Ingenious to say the least. But the lack of a ground around anything operating in a humid environment scares me.I see that you have the two lamp hood. My seven holes model came with a short arm/light stand. I up graded to a 24 inch arm/light stand and a hood with three high intensity CFL's. I tried growing M/J with the two lamps and they've great for seed germination but just not enough light for aggressive vegging, especially when you're at the top of the height adjustment.

As far as the lamps are concerned, they've got us by the short curlys. I haven't been able to find another source with the same lights that are more reasonably priced. I think we're generally screwed as they're made in China but I like the intensity. Please report back in a few months on how it's working out.

Thanks. Im not too worried about the ground because the AG and its hood never had one to begin with. Besides, the ground wouldn't work because the entire case is plastic.

I will be updating my journal thread (link is in my sig). I wont be able to give an unbiased opinion about the hood's growing capabilities because I have 8 additional CFLs and a 400W HID.

Hey, great right up man. Much appreciated, idk why ive never thought of this before haha... i blew my AG bulbs within the first few months i had it, and i refused to pay they're outrageous price so ive just been using CFL's in Y adaptors lined up on surge protectors as light source.
which model do u have there? mine is an space saver i believe, the 6 pod, and im not sure if my hood looks like yours there or not, i havnt seen mine in a while.
but i did like the hood when i was able to utilize it, works great for babys. thank you for makin me realize this is certainly very doable. also gives you the capability to put different temp lights in there like u stated. thank u again sir, great right up

Im using the pro 100 model. Even if you put just one socket in there I would recommend doing it. Youll have to let me know if you do it.

Oh snap!! that is pretty cool. After my aerogarden grow went south and transplanted to soil, I took the hood and made it a fixture at the top of my grow box. Being able to put different lights in there would be very nice. Great post.

One suggestion. It might be easier to follow if you posted the pics inline instead of attachments. Again very good stuff!!

so i tore apart my hood here as well, ive got an AG space saver or 6 pod unit... almost identical to your procedure. very easy and painless, highly recommend this...
im off to store to grab 2 pigtail sockets, but i had a question on how exactly you mounted your sockets in the AG recepticles, or did you just pull wires through and it was solid enough? i beieve my question has to do with like in between step 7 and 8 or your tutorial, ill try and get some photos together here before the weekend is up

1 Q though why didnt u just wire them back to the figure 8 plug
Thanks I get that all the time. lol :).

My wiring harness was broke to shit. That was why I did this project in the first place. I didnt think about if someones wasnt broken. That would make things simpler. Thanks for the input. +rep!
