Sound proofing material

I have a wall where my exhaust fans blow against and its loud as hell, and any material that hard, it just bounces off. I was tryin to find some good foam but i couldnt find a store that has any. Anybody know of any good sound absorbant or dulling material? My friend has a studio and recording booth but i couldnt think of the material inside it, and he's outa town, so hit me up with some good feedback, thanks

ya that acoustic dampening stuff is good from music places, also from craft stores there is foam sheets in different thicknesses.. i got some a long time ago and had it laying around and used that for cusion where the fan mounts to the pipe and where the pipe mounts to the wall. the stuff i had is only like 1/8 thick but it worked for what i needed..

theres that foam that u put under ur sheets on ur bed, its only about an inch thick , but you could fold it and make it thicker. Just a thought, dunno if thats what ur looking for.

I went to a large craft store as well as matress giant and either had any foam material. I'm wanting some type of foam, around an inch thick, that will absorb and prevent sound from continuing on. I put 1/2 inch insulation sheet/foam board all in my box and around it, but that sound is still roaring off the outside wall. I even have some carpet padding(goes under the carpet when laying it) against that wall, and still. So some foam that has that coned, egg carton pattern on it would be sufficient, but just cant find that stupid shit for some reason. Would an acoustic place have it?

You must have a mega exhaust going there. How is the sound? Is it from the fan rumbling or literally from wind beating against the wall?

If it is the fan rumbling then stabilize it with your carpet foam.

If it is literally wind blowing against the wall then try a pillow, cotton, can you re-position the box, hang some sweaters between the exhaust and wall, seriously this has to be an easy fix. Good Luck and keep it Simple!

You might also try buying one of those foam paddings you get to place on top of mattresses. They are shaped like acoustic (kind of) and are about an inch thick. Try Walmart.

it's called "egg-crate" foam. any fabric store should sell it by the yard.

O ok thanks tinyT ill check that out. The only problem is is that this box has to be against the wall so 8'' is all i got, and yea that fan kicks some hair. It's a 120mm case fan but i paid $12 for it so it's quality, but the first week it was only running on 5v, instead of 12v, so now it makes a little hum. But now that i listen to it, the noise is that just jet stream it's got goin and then it hitting and bouncing off the carpet padding. I went to walmart, Matress Giant, and Michaels a craft store, nobody had any padding, but i'll keep hunting

this worked really good for me.
wallyworld 20 bucks.
and mites cant live in memory foam.
bit more spensive but mites cant live in it.

Ive been using Dynamat in cars for years. It is a self adhesive dampining material, all that is needed to apply is a heatgun or blowdryer and a roller.
When used in cars it virtually eliminates road noise, vibrations, especially vibrations cause by subwoofers.

You could easily apply a sheet to your wall then mount your fan right on top of it.
